Hi there, I was wondering if there is any way to merge a group into another one (speaking of public groups).

Moving the content is obvious, but I wonder if it is also possible to “move” or merge members into one group.

use case: I’m asking because we would like to open some “geographical groups” for our community, so the members can meet in person and recommend events.
E.g. we envision a group for members in city X, a group for members in city Y, and/or a group for members in Region Z.

specific example: Specifically, I am doubting whether/not to create two separate groups for the German cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf. They are major cities (600k-1000k inhabitants), about half an hour away by train, in a very densely populated region.  So I’m wondering if I should create 2 separate groups for those cities (we have hundreds of members in each) or make a group comprising the larger region.

But as we are not sure how these will be adopted, or how much content/activity we can expect, I am not sure if it makes more sense to have two separate groups or a major group.

If we first start by having two separate groups and there is not much activity, i wonder if there will be the possibility to merge them together in the future. This would give us more flexibility and we could adapt.

Any workarounds? Any experience / best practices about this?

Best,
Daniele

Not currently possible.

Merge isn’t an option within Control. And there aren’t any workarounds you can do on your own because there’s nothing for Groups in the API (just a few webhook events).

In theory, there are internal APIs that Support might be able to use to help you. But there’s no public operations documented.

Ideas you can vote for below. They did recently add an Events API, so maybe there’s hope for them adding Groups to the API (long overdue).

(those last two need to be merged together)
