Let me illustrate with an example of what I’m trying to accomplish.

For an upcoming release, I would like to include a general notification about the release, which lists the key features and improvements, then add separate updates for each of those features.  Ideally the general post would link to each of the more specific posts.  However, obviously the preview link is not the right one to use since this will become incorrect the moment the updates are published to the world.  Is there a way to either:

  • predict the URLs (and accept they will be incorrect until moment of publication)
  • or even better a magic URL which will change when the family is published? (Not expecting this to exist, though it would be nice!)

Hey @triskaideka - great question!

With our preview feature you can get a link that will still work after publishing an article or product update.

On the draft page of the article you want to link to, press ‘change’ on the sharing permission and set to ‘Anyone who has the preview link’ can access the preview. Copy this link and use it in the main article you’re publishing.

The downside is that it’s not the final URL (so the URL itself looks a bit messy), but the advantage is that you can embed these links in advance and you don’t have to change them at all even before publication.

Let me know if that’s clear!

Thanks @daniel.boon that works pretty well.  I see that the preview link redirects to the final URL after publication, so the “messy” URL is only visible if somebody’s inspecting the link pointing to it.  I guess if we care much about that we can change them at our leisure after publication, but at least knowing that the links will work.

It looks like we could also predict the “neater” form of the URL - is the article ID that appears in the preview URL guaranteed to remain constant through to publication?

Nice, good to hear @triskaideka :). The article ID in the preview URL is not guaranteed to remain constant through to publication.

To get a bit more nerdy in the case of product updates:

For product updates the ID currently does remain constant between preview and publication. But this is not guaranteed to stay this way forever, depending on some technical changes we’ll make on our end.
