When building or modifying notification emails it would be helpful to have a test feature that would do more than the current preview and would replace the tokens with test data, or at least callout if tokens are valid or invalid.

Right now you have to wait until the event triggers and during that time improperly formatted emails might be sent out to other users.

Thanks @dan_at_community, good idea about the email testing! We have similar ideas internally as well:

  1. Provide an email variable (token) selection tool to avoid misspelling.
  2. Send a test email to check if everything is properly formatted.

Curious to know your thoughts about them. I’ll put this idea to open and collect more feedback. :)

Great to hear that this is under consideration. It will really help admins to ensure accuracy of the email automation messages. Thanks for looking into this!

I’ve actually made some (small) errors in our email templates (with the email variables) because I was not able to test the emails. So I’m definitely voting for this one :relaxed:

Having an option to send out a test email (to any email address, no matter if it’s registered to the community) would be very helpful for bugfixing. Some bugs and regressions only occur with certain combinations of email provider (looking at you, Yahoo), OS and / or browser.

So if I’d be able to send a test email (e.g. to a yahoo email address) without actually having to register a new user first (or change the email field of an existing profile) and then to manually trigger the notification would make life much easier.

I inherited a lot of complex design templates for our Community and navigating the code is SO confusing. Not only do I have to make sure that all the code works for the design, but then testing the titles and making sure all of those work is basically like navigating blind. I have no clue what it’s going to look like unless I test it myself and trigger the event, which is a pain and there’s no good way to test it. I’ve been getting emails from our customers telling us that there’s an issue with it (and even some that try to DM me about the problem but since they can’t add image into DMs...it makes it hard too).
Anyway...would love this feature.

We have just released an upgrade to the email templates that tackle the pain points mentioned here.
