In the past 2 weeks, with increasing frequency, I’m seeing these sorts of spam being published in our community:
- New user creates a great-sounding new topic. Legitimate community members reply.
- Original poster replies using the exact same content as their first, but with spam links embedded.
Here’s an example of a sneaky spam reply:

I’ve discovered that all of the original posts are merely copied from legitimate posts on Reddit, which is why they sound legitimate. :( Here’s what comes up when I include the original post text in a Google search:

This is a disappointing experience for community members who take the time to reply, but I’m also not totally comfortable leaving up the original posts because they’re plagiarized from elsewhere.
Is anyone else experiencing this kind of spam? Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Can the spam filter be trained to recognize content that exists elsewhere on the internet?
