Skilljar: Merging Accounts in Skilljar and the impact to the Credly Badges

We merge several accounts in Skilljar every day. We have a question about the impact to one’s credly badge history - our assumption is that the badges will be automatically rolled into the new, primary skilljar profile, but there isn’t obvious documentation to support this assumption.

Has anyone had direct experience with this?

Hey @AmyBoomi - I have an answer for you!

This definitely comes up often with account merges, so I wanted to share some clarity.

The short answer: Credly badges don't automatically consolidate when accounts are merged in Skilljar, meaning that a step needs to happen on the Credly side. This is due to the fact that Skilljar and Credly are separate systems, so after a Skilljar account merge, your course completions roll into the primary email, but Credly uses email address as the unique identifier for badges for the profile integration. Any badges earned under the secondary email won't automatically appear in the primary Credly dashboard.

To consolidate Credly badge history, learners need to:

Log in to their Credly account at credly.com
Click their avatar (top-right corner) → Settings → Account
Select "Add an Email Address" or "Merge an Account"
Add the old email address, so badges from both addresses will then appear together in their Credly dashboard

If learners run into any issues with the Credly side of this, they can contact Credly support directly at https://support.credly.com.

Hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions.

Hey Spencer, me again - I was able to test this out. I had a colleague’s old account with Credly Badge A and his ‘keeper account’ with Credly Badge (Badge B). When I merged, I was hoping his ‘keeper account’ would have *both* Credly Badge A&B, but it only kept the original Badge B on his keeper profile.

In the merge account script, is it possible to add the Credly Badge as something to be ported? If so, can I request that somewhere?

Note - it ported the Skilljar certificate over, but not the Credly badge (as you stated above)

    @AmyBoomi

Thanks for testing this out and sharing the details!

You've confirmed exactly what's happening under the hood: the Skilljar merge capability currently ports certificates and completion data, but Credly badges are issued and managed by Credly independently, so they aren't included in what Skilljar's merge logic.

You will need to check if this is possible from your end, but from my research you should be able to do the following, so Badge A will show up on the keeper profile:

    • Log in to the keeper Credly account
    • Go to avatar → Settings → Account
    • Select "Merge an Account" and initiate from there using the old account's credentials

This should pull Badge A into the keeper account alongside Badge B.

As for your product question, requesting that Credly badges be included in Skilljar's account merge script is a great idea and absolutely worth submitting as a feature request. You can do that through the Gainsight Community Ideas portal. The more detail you include (your use case, frequency of merges, learner impact), the better.

Spencer, thank you for clarifying. On the Skilljar side, though, both credly badges (ones earned on old profile and ones earned on the dominant profile) would still appear in the user’s ‘my transcript’ page though, after a merge?

    No problem!

From the article I shared, the merge process moves over the following:

    • Domain and group memberships will be merged.
    • Course, lesson, and SCORM progresses will be merged.
    • Enrollments and Certificates will be moved.
    • Plan Enrollments will be moved
    • Learning Path Enrollments and Learning Path Progress will be moved
    • Purchases will be moved.
    • Quiz responses will be moved.
    • Avatars will be moved.
    • The student whose email you manually entered will be deleted.

The learner will also have to update their email in Credly, so the badge shows up in their student profile. This will be a two step process where the Admin from your team will merge the student recored and the student will need to add in their updated email into Credly, so the data is linked and shows up in the student profile page.
