General FAQ
Who is able to upload and attach files to posts on the community?
By default, only moderators, community managers, and admins can upload and attach files to posts on the community. It's possible to make it so that registered users and superusers are also able to upload files (see How To).
Where can you upload files?
You can upload files both on the community frontend as well as in Control. It's possible to upload files when creating a new topic and when replying to a topic.
What file types are currently supported?
We currently support the following file types:
- .zip
- .xml
- .txt
- .csv
- .doc/docx
- xls/xlsx
- .ppt/pptx.
What's the maximum file size limit for an individual file?
The maximum file size that can be uploaded to a post is 50 MB.
Is there a maximum file size limit/number of files that can be uploaded per post?
Per post, you can upload up to 50 MB of files. There's no limit on the number of files that can be attached to a post.
Can you give specific users the ability to upload files?
Yes, you can give specific users permission to upload files. Simply create a Custom Role and enable the permission 'Upload files to posts' (see this How To for more information).
Can you delete files from posts after uploading them?
Yes, you can delete files from posts. Moderators, Community Managers, and Admins can delete any file from any post. Just edit the post (in Control or on the actual Community) and hit the delete button next to the file. Normal users are able to remove files up until the standard time restriction on editing a post - after that, they'll need to get in touch with a moderator to remove a file.
Security
How secure is the file upload system?
We scan every file for viruses before anyone on the community can download them.
How do you check files for viruses?
We use an open source antivirus engine called ClamAV.
Do you check files for explicit/illegal content?
We do not check files for explicit or illegal content. If you enable file uploads for anyone on your community, you're accepting an additional level of risk.
Good to know
Is it possible to upload and attach files to private messages?
No - currently this is not possible, and isn't planned on our roadmap. There's an idea open for this on our ideas board.
What happens when you upload an image using the file upload button?
We treat it exactly the same as if you'd attached it through the image upload (i.e. the restrictions of 5 MB for images still apply).
