FYI: Widget Visibility limitations for Topic Banner widget

After investigating via a support ticket, I learned this about the Topic Banner widget (the one that features a topic/event atop the community).

I've heard back from engineering that this particular widget is not intended to support the private visibility function, so the team will be removing those settings from the widget.

This is specific to the Private visibility setting, but (I believe) that’s core to the entire widget visibility settings (it’s private and then visible to only certain segments). So effectively the Topic Banner widget can only be used in Public mode and cannot be customized via widget visibility settings.

While disappointing, it makes logical sense. When visible and in-use, the Topic Banner displays across every single page of the CC platform. That’s an outlier from most other widgets, which are specific to customizable pages (Home, Community/KB/Ideas landing page(s), Custom Pages).

That’s a good question, @atwhite !

It looks like it does, based on my testing on our staging community. I featured a post that isn’t accessible when logged out and I’m not seeing it when I visit the staging site while logged-out.

Note these public modules / content types that can’t be permissioned:

  • Events
  • Product Updates

Thanks for the heads up; that’s good to know. We generally use the standard Banner more anyway, just because it offers more styling options, but the difference in permissions will add another layer to our decision process about which to use when.

I couldn’t find documentation on this, so I may have to do some testing, but in the meantime...do you know with the Topic banner if the usual default visibility logic still applies? i.e., if the article being featured is in a section that is only visible to certain roles, only those roles will see the banner?

Thank you, @DannyPancratz. Our instances are fully gated, and I wasn’t able to easily test, so I thought I’d ask in the meantime. I was hoping someone might just know the answer—I didn’t expect you to take the time to test instead! 😅 Regardless, it’s much appreciated.
