Question

How to? Bulk cleanup of public tags and re-assigning tags, ideally with AI / MCP / automated assignment

Hi all,

We run a community with a few thousand topics and far too many public tags, well over 1,500. Many are duplicates, typos or one-offs created by members. We want to start from scratch rather than just merge tag as that would take lots of time.

What we want to achieve

  1. Define a fixed list of about 60 public tags that only admins control.
  2. Delete all existing public tags.
  3. Then, assign 2–3 tags from the new list to each topic, ideally automatically (API, MCP, script or AI) rather than by hand.

Why
We need reliable tags to route community requests to the right internal team. Right now the tags are too inconsistent for that.

Questions

  • Is there an API or CSV import to assign tags to existing topics in bulk, including questions and discussions, not only ideas?
  • Has anyone built automated tag assignment, for example with an LLM or MCP? What worked, and what didn’t?

Thanks!

I did this when we migrated to GS. We removed the ability to have the public create tags as well. It has been great to have a “clean house”. Highly recommend this project!

We worked with onboarding to say xyz badges need to become xyz in every scenario. We either deleted the badge or merged similar names into 1 badge.

I just created a new tag and needed to assign it to 15 posts inside of 1 content area. I was not able to find a way to assign the badge in bulk to multiple posts at 1 time. I did go to Content > Overview and filtered for the spot, selected all the posts, but was not able to bulk assign the badge. I had to go 1 by 1 so Id be interested to see if there is a way to do so in bulk.

Do not know of a way to auto tag something without human intervention.

Thanks for sharing your experience @mitchell.gordon !

In our case, it actually wouldn’t even need to be an automated workflow. I’d be happy to just do a big cleanup in bulk, one-off. Once I have the Public Tag rules set up, it would be self-regulating (as the user would mostly select the right tags when creating new topics)
