In my efforts to clean up the main Nav, (see related priority here), I want to consolidate categories like in the screenshot. How to achieve that?

You can’t merge, but you can locate content published in one category and move it to another en masse, then delete the no longer needed category.
To find, go to Control > Content and filter to locate the content Published in the current category. Then select all and the Move to button and new destination.

I moved all content from the Support Updates category to other categories thx to the tip by Scott.
@Julian any idea why the refreshed nav still maintains a count of 2 for the category?
P.S. The count against the forums now show as 0.
