Is there a way to use the same segment filter with different inputs?

Hi all,

I’m new to Gainsight, so apologies if this has a straightforward answer, but I can’t quite figure out if creating a segment with two filters of the same type is possible.

Basically, I’d like to create a segment of people whose Registration Date is less than X days ago, and also more than Y days ago (so something like, less than 180 days + more than 60 days, to create a bounded range), but it doesn’t seem like it’s possible with the filters as choosing a second of the “Registration Date” type supersedes the first.

Happy to be wrong/in the wrong place, so hoping others may have insight on how to approach this.

Thanks!

Hi @kschott

Such a great question — and you’re definitely in the right place 😊
Also, there’s absolutely no harm in asking any question here, whether it feels big, small, or somewhere in between. We’re all learning together and we hope you feel comfortable asking all ranges of questions here 🙂

And you’re right! At the moment, when two filters are applied on the same date field or filter, one does override the other, so setting up a bounded range that way isn’t supported directly.

Yes this is not possible, perhaps a great idea to submit?

But what would you like to accomplish with this segment/list? Perhaps there is a work-around to get what you want of need? Happy to think along! We are also new and just launched our community and figuring out a lot of stuff. But this community here is really helpful!

Thanks so much for the confirmation!

Thanks for the confirmation! I’d love to explore if there is a workaround. I’m exploring creating segments of people who are sort of “tiered” newcomers. We currently have a segment for folks who’ve registered in fewer than 90 days and then one for folks who have registered in more than 90 days, but I’m exploring options for being able to reach different groups within that larger range. So, in addition to the fewer than 90 days, we can look at 90 to say 120, 120 to 180, etc. and address different behaviors/guidance for those segments. That would entail two filters for each: one for “registration date less than 120 days ago” and one for “registration date more than 90 days ago”, and so on. If there is another way to create a range like that for a segment, I’m all for exploring it!

I also did create an idea, thanks for the suggestion! It’s here if anyone would like to upvote/follow along.

@kschott I really like this idea! I think ranges would be helpful in other areas, too, like Community members who have created posts somewhere between the range of newbie and superuser, or something like that.

In terms of finding workarounds or other ways of creating your segments, have you considered pairing registration dates with activity thresholds of some kind? I’m just thinking, when it comes to addressing different behaviors/guidance, given that some users start engaging very early while others take a while to warm up, segmenting just by registration date might result in a pretty broad spectrum of member maturity within each of those segments. Adding an activity component might help refine those segments and allow you to deliver more targeted guidance. E.g., Users who registered 90+ days ago who have never posted versus those with 10+ posts.

@atwhite That’s definitely in line with what I was thinking as well. I’ve already done that for other segments (pairing those two together, that is), but I was thinking this might be the option for getting at the range as best as possible currently. Essentially doing that comparison and then building logic off of that timeline. Thank you for the idea and for the reassurance!
