......anyone else have this issue? Short of having to authorise every sign up and post, is there anything else we should be doing to prevent this.

It's wasting a huge amount of time having to mark as spam, not to mention all the fake accounts that will now show up in our registered user stats........
Hey Darran,

Our spam detection API stopped working for a period of time over the weekend, and so yours and some other communities were unprotected during this period. Our out of office engineers solved the issue on Saturday but it looks like the spammers had a lot of fun during the period where there was no spam filter working.

We're helping with removing spam from your community and others where we've seen they've been hit by spam.

But this won't be a regular occurrence as it only happened because of the API call for spam prevention not working for a period of time.

All of the users who've made spam posts are banned on your community, so in your user export these won't show as registered users they will show as banned, and so shouldn't affect your registered user stats.
Perfect, thanks for getting back to my email on this too @Shane1 Fun weekend!!
