We’re looking into creating a “News & Updates” section on our Community and we thought it would be great if we could default the view a customer sees as “Recently created”. We would essentially like the news to be sorted by newest by default rather than whatever had a comment added to it.
Is this possible in any way?

This isn’t the answer to your question (I don’t know the answer, sorry), but I instead use the Product Updates module as a blog that hosts more than just Product updates. Are you using that module already or have you considered that as an option?
The UI is more modern looking and it defaults to most recent first. If you configure the community as one of your product areas, it enables a sort of the community-only posts from any other product areas.
And if you want this in your community drop down menu, I use something I call a “phantom category” that exists as a community category, but with a third party script to redirect to the the new URL (in this case: the product updates module, pre-filtered to community updates)

We don’t currently use Product Updates as we’re a pretty complex business, and it wasn’t fit for purpose until recently, but I will certainly consider it going forward. I’d need to double check that it’s contents can appear on the dynamic content widget as we will be using that on our homepage soon.
+9Content definitely works with dynamic content widget. I’m using that to display my 3 most recent update posts.
