Question

Ungated Community User Registration?

We’re looking into ungating our Community and allowing non-users the ability to create profiles (with limited access to content). For Communities that are ungated, how do you moderate non-user registration and associated posts/comments? Any best practices so our paying users continue to have a great experience?

Some at GS would argue that my community has the most spam they have ever seen 😅 Especially when it comes to public communities so Id love to help keep others safe!

Have your AI moderation agent up to date under en.insided.com/ai/moderation-agent. Having this up to date will help prevent any spam posts from getting through.

I would recommend asking your CSM about user registration AI agent. This helps to do a quick scan of the profile upon registration. This will catch the obvious spam accounts right away. This has really helped trim down the accounts I need to ban on a daily basis.

Premoderation rules are extremely important as well found under en.insided.com/settings/premoderation/index. I can share my banned phrase list with you if youd like. Keeping this up to date is important as you start to see any attempts to post spam in public locations.

I keep a tab open for the user overview in admin 24/7 en.insided.com/users/overview refresh that a handful of times a day and do a quick check.

Where spam gets posted: Spam can get posted in posts, DMs and most regularly inside of open text fields in the user profile. When you ban someone, be sure to remove any content in those profile fields. Even though a user is banned, their profile is still public. If you dont remove it, they will still get what they are looking to do which is include urls, phrases and really anything they are looking to promote. Ban then wipe the profile of those extra additives is a best pratice.
