This would incentivize the behavior we want to promote: marking answers.

Problem/limitation:

  • The system email notification is helpful, but what happens if they don’t act on that prompt?
  • Moderators and CMs can do clean up, but it requires making assumptions for the question-asker and/or vetting the answer independently.

Solution:

If we want to promote a behavior, then match it to the incentives. With points as the foundation for gamification, such a feature would provide the reward. And Communities that tie these digital points into real-life benefits and rewards then have a stronger incentive to drive the behavior.

Thanks for sharing this @DannyPancratz. To make users aware of the incentive, would you also update the system email notification to let users know that this earns them points?

Seems to me like adding this option would be most valuable in combination with the following idea:

Yes, I’d definitely then update the system email to call attention to the points earned for marking the correct answer.

And, yes, those two look like a great pairing.

I like the idea of awarding points.

I only see one possible downside: Super users (i.e. users with the primary role “superuser”) have the permission to mark answers, too. So this could incentivize them to mark their own (or other users’) answers as correct and jeopardize the whole idea behind it.

Small correction to my previous comment (as I can’t edit comments in the ideation area):

Super users can mark a solution, but only in Control, not in the frontend. So if a community doesn’t open Control for its super users, then there is no issue here.

This is a great idea, but it should go further. We need the ability to define new ways of acquiring points. I’d like to be able to award points for things like….

1. Logging in every a number of times over a series of days
2. Searching and finding content WITHOUT defaulting to asking a question
3. Being tagged by someone in a post
4. Having the most viewed topic during a period of time
5. Speedy responses (a response within 0 and so many minutes/hours)
6. Picking up old posts (older than a certain amount of time)

...I could go on. All of the above would be aimed at driving behaviours needed to keep the Community momentum flowing. But different Communities have different kinds of people, so the rewards need to be able to be tailored to your audience. I should say that points for selecting “Best Answer” should be there as a standard offering. Moderators and staff can’t always do this easily. Users need to be persuaded to do this.

💯

And to add to that, automated badges when you’ve marked 3..5..10 answers

I was able to automate this with a webhook and Zapier and we’ve been using it for 16 months now.

There’s a webhook for marked answers and then you can assign points via Zapier actions.

@rhall I do something like your #4 for most viewed content over the previous 30 days, but not completely automated. The content dashboard will give you the posts with the most views in a timeline.

From there, my automation triggers on a moderator tag that then awards badges and points to the user that asked and answered.

You could also definitely award points for your #5 & #6 through zapier automations. I just added something similar to the link above, looking at the date/time of the reply.

A note of caution on #5 tho, is when users chase points with low quality replies.

This is interesting @DannyPancratz. I’ve been looking into the API but haven’t really got to the webhooks yet. It’s my third day looking into this, I’m still a novice in InSided 👶🏼.
