Liking a topic/reply and voting for an idea will have a varying levels of impact for each community.

Community Managers, like me, will want to incentivize/reward those activities differently.

Additionally, points for likes can lead to users trying to game the system by liberally liking most posts/replies (I’m seeing some of that currently). However, there’s no way to reduce/remove the points for giving a Like without negatively impacting Votes for ideas.

without negatively impacting Votes for ideas.

Edit: without negatively impacting the points awarded for Votes for Ideas.

@DannyPancratz if I understand your idea correctly, you’re asking to be able to set separate rules in gamification for Votes vs. Likes. Is that correct?

If so, I fully agree. This would really help us as we’ve seen a huge uptick in our community member activity & points since we migrated ideas to our community and are noticing some customers “gaming the system” by upvoting ideas relentlessly (see screenshot below of a fairly tongue-in-cheek post from one of our customers).

I’d like to add to this idea: It would help for us to be able to separate IdeasQuestions, and Conversations in the Award points for creating a topic gamification logic. Here’s what I’d like to see as options in the Point system configuration:

  • Award __ points for providing an answer
  • Award __ points for posting a reply
  • Award __ points for receiving a like
  • Award __ points for receiving a vote
  • Award __ points for giving a like
  • Award __ points for upvoting an idea
  • Award __ points for creating a question
  • Award __ points for creating a conversation
  • Award __ points for creating an idea
Current Point system rules lack flexibility in incentivizing engagement with ideas independently from questions & conversations
Tongue-in-cheek post from a customer clearly pointing out how members can game the system

Yes, exactly.

I like your additions as well.

For the Insided team, my use case is the opposite of Adam’s. We award 1 point for giving a like or upvoting an idea. I’m seeing some users gaming the system with excessive likes on posts and replies. But I still want to incentivize Idea Votes with points (we don’t have the idea volume that Adam’s community seems like it has) as that part of our community sees lower adoption.

@DannyPancratz I envy you for lower idea volume in your community 😂

Thanks for kickstarting this idea. Though our use cases are opposite, the functionality needed remains the same and I imagine this added flexibility in gamification could be huge for many inSided customers
