Ability to Revoke Points from User

Hi everyone,

We launched our community 2 weeks ago and I have already faced an issue with users being granted points for posting irrelevant content and lacking a possibility to revoke those. We have published housekeeping rules, but it isn’t enough as there always will be inattentive/spam users.

I believe it’s important to have possibility to revoke points.

My use cases:

  • User posted random content in Blogs (not offensive to ban, but irrelevant to our community/or just a hyperlink to some article) and I had to remove this content (I have 4 cases! users still have points)
  • User posted content in another language and we had to remove this content because we have EN content only (3 cases and users still have points)
  • User posted content and then removed it on his own (I have 2 users who posted and removed their content and they still have points)
  • User posted inappropriate content (offensive OR spam) (1 case)

We’ve built a strong gamification and that is important to have possibility to fix stuff like this, otherwise that could be demotivating for other community members.

Looking forward to your feedback and comments!

Thanks for sharing this idea @Kseniya!

It sounds like you’re asking for the option to manually revoke points from users. Given the use cases, what do you think about simply revoking points earned when a user’s post is trashed? That seems like it would be more scalable to me, but curious to hear your thoughts.

Also interested to hear from any other community managers who have an opinion on whether points should be revoked when a topic or reply is trashed!

Very good point, @daniel.boon!

I’m always FOR automation when possible   And agree it is way more scalable.

I just thought it would be great to have more leverage, so maybe there could be automatic rules implemented + possibility to manually revoke points? Like we have with badges.

I agree that both options can work together @Kseniya :)

I think this is a great idea! The community I help manage has a rewards system where I manually award points for customer participation in recurring programs and more particular cases (awarding points as an incentive to participate in a spotlight video). Being able to deduct points would serve as a cushion when I accidentally award an incorrect amount of points which has already happened.
