I’d like to see the ability to add custom emojis. We have a number of them that we currently use in our Slack community and there doesn’t seem to be a way to bring these over into inSided. Seems like a missed opportunity to amplify and personalize content in topics, etc.

Hey @Scott Baldwin, thanks for sharing! I like this idea :)

  • How would you like to use these emojis? e.g. be able to add custom emojis in the post ->
  • Who do you think should be able to create custom emojis? End users, or only with certain role?

  • Custom emojis would be in the same emoji dropdown when posting topics or replies -- maybe that’s a separate tab with the favicon of the community to draw some attention to that list
  • For topics, articles, events, etc. I’d also love to see the emoji more-so as a reaction as it is in Slack and I’d even love to open things up beyond just a “like” to allow people to express themselves more in relation to a topic, article, etc. Like is pretty one dimensional and doesn’t communicate or capture the emotion of a community.
  • I think we can look to Slack for inspiration on how to handle emoji’s both in-line and in post reactions. LinkedIn also does this well. This would also pair well with my idea around Emoji Search
  • I would leave the ability to add emoji’s to admins/CMs/moderators of a community.

We are developing a super user program for 2025 and would love to see this idea implemented! During my research I saw that some communities offer custom emojis as a perk to super users. Would be “super” cool if this could be added at some point. We create custom emojis all the time internally with Slack and it’s a lot of fun.
