Ability to delete private messages

A good Community knows it's members. An even better Community knows each other. I am delighted to see that members are reaching out to each other, not only for answers, but also for fun. In order to do so, a lot of private messages are being send. Not only our members, but also we as moderators receive and send quite a few of them.

We would love to see the possibility to delete private messages, for both moderators as members.

Why, you ask?

  • If a member sends a private message with personal information such as an address or bank account number, they sometimes ask us to remove that information after the case has been handled. We can not meet their request.
  • Some members receive unpleasant messages (or spam). They wish to have those messages removed.
  • Removing irrelevant or old messages keeps the Control environment structured and clear for a moderator. The same goes for our members.

Lets keep the Community fresh!

    We're still getting user requests for this. Many of our more active users get a lot of private messages. Often filled with personal information of the sender. The sender is often also a forum user who tends to not come back after their problem has been resolved. So, they do not delete their sent message, and our active users are stuck with an inbox filled with irrelevant and privacy sensitive stuff.

     

    Why is it so hard to make a function to clear your inbox? I have been on fora half my life and literally everywhere I can empty my inbox (either archive or delete).

    Ideally it should be that a sender can delete their sent messages and they are gone for both sender and receiver.  And a receiver should be able to clear their inbox without deleting the message for the sender.

      Additionally, sometimes we get spammers on our forum who send private messages to other users. We generally ban spammers, which leaves the offending private message in the recipients’ inbox. They have no way of deleting this unwanted message. Unless we actually erase the sender's account. Which we rather not do with spammers, just to prevent them re-registering with the samen e-mail.
