Ability to move comments to any reply level in threaded replies (L1, L2, L3)

Related products:CC IdeationCC Moderation

Threaded Replies lets moderators move a reply up to the top level (L2/L3 → L1). There is no way to move a comment down into a thread, or from one parent comment to another. We’d like moderators to be able to move any comment to any reply level within the same topic.

This shortcoming is actually the main reason why I still haven’t turned on this feature in our community.

Why we need it (as observed in other communities)

  • Members regularly answer another comment, but post it as a new top-level comment because they don’t know which reply option to use. Sometimes they use the wrong “Reply” button and the answer lands under the wrong parent.
  • Today a moderator can’t fix this. The thread stays confusing, and nobody can tell which comment a reply belongs to.

How often it would come up

  • Several times a week in busier communities.
  • Most often right after launch and with new members, who haven’t learned the reply behavior yet. Most topics are started by new users who don’t stick around long enough to learn it.

Proposed behavior

  • Moderators can move a comment to a different level (L1, L2, L3) or under a different parent comment in the same topic.
  • A clear “move to…” action in the comment’s moderation menu, e.g. “Move under another comment”.
  • It’s a manual moderator decision. Moderators can tell from the discussion and quoted text where a reply belongs, and can leave it as is when it’s unclear.
  • No notification to the member when the move stays within the same topic.
  • Open question for Gainsight: what happens to a comment’s own replies when it moves? We’d suggest they move with it.

Impact
Moderators can keep threads readable without deleting or reposting content. This removes the main blocker for enabling Threaded Replies.

This would be a fantastic way to further improve the terrific threaded replies functionality. Thank you!
