Bulk operations on the the User Overview page (e.g. send private message)

It would be super useful to be able to select users via the User Overview page for an action e.g. PM all selected users!

Another use case for bulk actions on the Users page - I’d love to be able to select all new employees that have signed up and bulk apply the “employee” custom role.

+1 on this (or maybe 100). Would love to be able to bulk action activities like role changes (primary and custom), award badges, delete, and even ban or un-ban.

API is an option, but not everyone has regular access to engineering resources.

Hello @Scott Baldwin @Chris Anderson @Kgastaldo @Ditte @Jurgen I'm opening this idea again as we are now considering improving the User overview.

About filters, which ones would be more valuable to you that we add to the User overview? Can you order them from most important to least?

  • rank
  • number of topics created
  • group the user is a member of
  • date of joining the community
  • number of comments marked as best reply
  • follower
  • following
  • custom registration fields
  • any others?

  • delete user
  • assign role
  • ban, unban
  • Assign rank
  • Assign badge
  • Add to group
  • Invite to group
  • Send private message
  • any others?

@Marion Frecaut that’s great to hear!

Filters rank ordered:

  1. date of joining the community
  2. rank
  3. custom registration fields
  4. number of topics created
  5. number of comments marked as best reply
  6. follower
  7. following
  8. group the user is a member of
  9. any others?
    1. days since last login

Bulk actions rank ordered:

  1. assign role
  2. Assign badge
  3. Send private message
  4. Assign rank
  5. ban, unban
  6. delete user
  7. Add to group
  8. Invite to group
  9. any others?

@Marion Frecaut to be clear, these apply to the page at:

/users/overview

If that’s the case, then:

  • we’d first need the ability to display different columns of data on that page other than the current ones which are User, Activity, Roles, Registration date, and Last login.
  • I’d also probably want the ability to save a view that I’ve created so it can be re-used vs. having to build that view each time.
  • I’d also want the ability to combine different filters to get to the resulting list (today you can’t do that as each selection eliminates that filter from being used again)
  • I’d love to have a way to export that result as well as a CSV, etc.
  • I’d like to see some cleanup and alignment with labels (e.g. “comments” is what you call them on the Overview page while they are called “replies” on the profile detail), “solved” vs. “best answer”

The priority of the filters should matter little here, as you’re just exposing attributes related to the user’s profile and allowing people to filter off them. So you could say I’d want to flexibility to filter off any attribute of a users profile and to combine them as needed to get to a set of results upon which I can take one or more actions in bulk.

For example, here’s some questions or tasks that a community manager might want to be able to answer or do via this page:

  • Show me all people that joined the community in the last 6 days who haven’t yet posted a topic so I can send them a message and encourage them to get engaged
  • Show me all people that joined the community in the last 2 weeks and haven’t had a return visit since then so I can message them and get them re-engaged and returning
  • Find all people located in Toronto so I can invite them to join our new Toronto user group
  • Identify those users that have posted X topics and comments within the last 10 days in the XYZ group and award them a badge

Filters I’d be interested in having:

  • Date joined
  • Rank
  • Rank Title
  • User Role
  • Custom profile fields (e.g. show me all people in a certain city/region)
  • No. topics
  • No. comments
  • No. of likes
  • Number of visits
  • Last visit date
  • Last activity date
  • Follower
  • Following
  • Badge(s)
  • Group(s) they are part of
  • Others
    • SSO values (if set)
    • for those using ideation module they may be interested in votes?? (we don’t use it)
    • Signature (set or blank?)

Bulk actions:

  • Send private message (especially if this allowed for more than 50 outbound at a time)
  • Add to group
  • Invite to group
  • Delete/erase user
  • Award badge
  • Revoke badge
  • Ban user
  • Unban user
  • Assign role
  • Others
    • Merge user - I’d like to have some way to merge duplicate profiles using different logins

@banthonisz I know you are interested in automation capabilities so I'm curious to get your opinion on the following about the User overview.

About filters, which ones would be more valuable to you that we add to the User overview? Can you order them from most important to least?

  • rank
  • number of topics created
  • group the user is a member of
  • date of joining the community

  • follower
  • following
  • custom registration fields
  • any others?

  • delete user
  • assign role
  • ban, unban

  • Assign badge
  • Add to group
  • Invite to group
  • Send private message
  • any others?

@Scott Baldwin Great input, thanks for that! I’ve only got one question.

You mentioned:

  • I’d also want the ability to combine different filters to get to the resulting list (today you can’t do that as each selection eliminates that filter from being used again)

Do you mean that you would want to use a filter (such as the Role filter) twice in order to create an AND filter (show all users that have role x AND all users that have role y) instead of only having an OR filter (show all users that have role x OR y)?

January 31, 2022

@Sebastian ideally I’d be able to do both AND and OR filters.
