Give Gainsight Customer Communities a framework for securely embedding dynamic community content and engagement experiences throughout a company's external .com ecosystem — product pages, support sites, documentation, developer portals, learning centers, blogs and other digital properties.

Think of it as "Community Everywhere."

The community remains the centralized, governed system of record for conversations, member-generated knowledge and engagement, while selected community experiences can be distributed wherever customers are already interacting with the brand.

The Inspiration: Lithium ActiveCast

Longtime community practitioners may remember ActiveCast, a capability in the legacy Lithium community platform.

ActiveCast allowed organizations to generate JavaScript widgets that surfaced dynamic Lithium community content on external web pages. Rather than requiring every customer to visit the community itself, companies could bring elements of the community experience into other parts of their .com ecosystem.

For example, a product page could display:

  • Latest discussions about that product

  • Featured or trending topics

  • Recently solved questions

  • Relevant community knowledge

  • Ratings and reviews

  • Calls to participate in community conversations

The content still originated in the centralized community platform. ActiveCast simply allowed the community experience to travel.

That architectural principle deserves a modern implementation.

The Opportunity for Gainsight

Today's customer journey is even more fragmented than it was during the Lithium era.

Customers interact with brands through:

Product → Documentation → Support → Academy → Developer Portal → Blog → Community → Events → Social

Yet community is frequently treated as another destination in that list.

I believe Gainsight has an opportunity to make community an engagement and knowledge layer spanning the entire digital customer experience.

Instead of:

Website → "Visit our Community"

imagine:

Website ⇄ Community

Documentation ⇄ Community

Developer Portal ⇄ Community

Support ⇄ Community

Academy ⇄ Community

The community becomes connective tissue rather than another digital silo.

Example Use Cases

Imagine visiting a product documentation page and seeing:

"What the Community Is Saying"

Three current discussions related specifically to the product or feature being documented.

Or a support article displaying:

"Solved by the Community"

Relevant accepted solutions and peer-generated answers.

Or a developer portal displaying:

"Trending Developer Discussions"

Current technical conversations dynamically pulled from the developer community.

Or a product page displaying:

"Ask the Community"

A lightweight interaction allowing a visitor to begin a question without first navigating away from the page.

Each experience could ultimately lead users deeper into the Gainsight-powered community while exposing the value of community to people who might otherwise never discover it.

What a Modern "ActiveCast" Could Look Like

Rather than simply recreating a legacy JavaScript widget system, Gainsight could provide a modern Community Experience SDK / Embeddable Community Framework.

Administrators could configure components such as:

  • Latest Discussions

  • Trending Discussions

  • Featured Content

  • Unanswered Questions

  • Accepted Solutions

  • Related Community Content

  • Community Experts

  • Events

  • Ideas

  • Product Feedback

  • Polls

  • Ratings

  • "Ask the Community"

  • "Join the Conversation"

Content could be filtered dynamically using metadata such as:

  • Product

  • Topic

  • Category

  • Tag

  • Persona

  • Language

  • Customer segment

  • Content type

An administrator could configure the component in Gainsight and receive an embed snippet or API/SDK configuration for placement elsewhere.

Why This Matters Strategically

Organizations increasingly allow customer conversations to fragment across websites, documentation platforms, Slack, Discord, Reddit, LinkedIn and countless other destinations.

That fragmentation creates an enormous knowledge-management problem.

Valuable customer knowledge is created every day, but much of it remains disconnected from the organization's searchable, persistent knowledge ecosystem.

A strong owned community can function as something much larger than a discussion forum.

It can become the organization's tribal knowledge base — an ever-growing repository of searchable social knowledge created collaboratively by customers, experts, employees, and community teams.

The goal should therefore be two-directional:

Bring valuable external conversations and insights INTO the community.

And:

Bring valuable community knowledge OUT to the places customers need it.

That creates a powerful model:

External Ecosystem ⇄ Gainsight Community Intelligence Hub ⇄ Distributed Customer Experiences

The Business Value

This capability could potentially improve several outcomes simultaneously.

Community discovery: Expose community value to customers who never intentionally visit the community.

Engagement: Place opportunities for participation directly within the customer's existing journey.

Case deflection: Surface accepted solutions and peer-generated knowledge at the moment someone is seeking help.

Content discovery: Give valuable community content a much larger distribution footprint.

SEO and knowledge longevity: Strengthen the relationship between customer-generated knowledge and the company's owned digital ecosystem.

Community ROI: Allow community teams to demonstrate influence beyond traffic occurring directly inside the community platform.

Customer intelligence: Create a stronger connection among community behavior, digital journeys and Gainsight customer data.

And perhaps most importantly:

Community stops being somewhere customers have to go.

Community becomes something customers encounter naturally throughout their relationship with the company.

The Bigger Vision

This could become particularly powerful within the broader Gainsight ecosystem.

Imagine combining:

Customer data + product usage + community activity + contextual community content.

A customer reading documentation about Feature X could see relevant Feature X discussions.

A customer struggling with Feature Y could encounter an accepted community solution before opening a support ticket.

A highly engaged contributor could see opportunities to answer unanswered questions related to their demonstrated expertise.

Community content becomes contextual rather than simply chronological.

That begins to transform community from a destination into an intelligent engagement layer across the customer journey.

The Principle Behind the Idea

Lithium ActiveCast demonstrated this concept many years ago with relatively simple JavaScript widgets.

Technology has advanced enormously since then, but the underlying principle remains compelling:

Centralize the community and its knowledge. Decentralize the experience.

Or even more simply:

The community doesn't need to live everywhere. Its value does.

I would love to see Gainsight take that principle and reinvent it for the modern customer-community ecosystem.
