Filtering global search by category / product

I’ve seen several ideas about filtering and search, but none of them seemed to describe the problem we are facing.

Our community will soon be multi product (think Apple, Microsoft, etc) so basically that means that our categories will become our products: Category A = Product A > Category B = Product B, etc.

From a search functionality perspective this bring quite a bit of a challenge since currently ‘searchers’ can’t filter results by the product they use. We know that the main search everyone uses is the one on the home page and there doesn’t seem to be a way to add any filter on that one.

What we want to avoid is user of Product A having to go through results of Product B, but we can’t find a way to get around this.

So here’s where the idea comes. We’d love to see the global search on the home page being able to filter results by category / product. One of our product designers created a mock up to help visualize a potential solution.

Typeform and Videoask are products in this context.

There’re of course other ways to solve this, as seen on the Apple communities for instance. See where it says communities (aka products) at the bottom.

Hope this resonates with other folks.

@Gabolino i think you can filter by category on the all results page from search, just not when you first make the search itself. Here’s an example from Our community (granted we only have one parent category)

I like the idea though of filtering for that up-front vs. post search.

Yes, Im aware of that Scott. Unfortunately vast majority of searches are made from the home page.

Filtering would be ideal when people do their first search - which often is from the home page .

Filtering could be a solution, another could be showing where the results live (in category A, in category By, etc) when displaying the drop down results. Seen this in other communities. Will try and find an example of that.

Hello @Gabolino thanks a lot for taking the time to create this idea and the mock up. This is very interesting and thinking of the multi product use case is definitely something we will look into when making improvements to the search.

thanks to you @Marion Frecaut took this screenshot from the Mural community where you can see the search results showing the category - something as simple as this would alredy make a difference.

Thanks for sharing this idea @Gabolino,

While we see the value here, this isn’t something we’re actively prioritising right now due to other roadmap commitments.

We appreciate the submission and will revisit it as priorities evolve.

Kind regards,

Graeme
