Language menu
Hi,
Since we are a worldwide company we have to support our clients in many popular languages. There are a lot of users who do not speak English. They are interested in posting their questions in a local language and search for topics only in their own language. So it is hard to operate the community in English for such users.
In our current Forum solution we have a mechanism to redefine text for every label of the UI in a local language and apply that .xml to the forum as a language pack. So a user can choose the language of UI, then the platform run the correspondent language pack and the user can see the forum in the chosen language.
How it is organized:
Every placeholder has a default name. The platform "knows" where every placeholder should be located in the UI.
In the admin panel a community manager can open (or even create his own) language pack and redefine the specific placeholder text for the specific language. Like so:
This way the text will be applied to every location where the placeholder is used if a user changes the UI language.
To find the 'Key' of the placeholder you have to redefine, you can use a special view of the UI (also available in the admin panel). It shows all interface as a 'Keys' without the text:
So a community manager can simply find a key using a search engine for the language pack in admin panel and simply redefine it.
I don't think it's so hard to technically realize such tool. It would significantly improve a usability of the non-English-speaking users. And your portfolio, of course :)
Hope I was helpful. Please take the idea into account. It is much more convenient for each side of a community than several separate language instances.
