Let users see their email address in their profile (and make it editable)

For inSided community users it is not possible to see (or edit) the email address they set up when they registered.

If the email address of the user changes (or it has been years since registration and the user simply doesn’t remember anymore), a moderator needs to make that change or give that information → Usually a user needs to publicly ask to have the own email address changed (which doesn’t look very professional for a community), the conversation needs to move to private messages (in order to keep the information private), the moderator needs to make that change in the Control Panel and confirm it to the user. For both the user and the moderator this is much more hassle than necessary.

That’s why we propose that the email address field will be shown in the frontend for users who view their own profile. In addition to that we propose that the email address can be changed in the frontend, just like it is possible for personal information or the password.

Yes please we really need this.

Some thoughts on this:

  • if notifications bounce, maybe there could be a prompt for people to change their email address — a simple in-app notification would help. As would something when they next log into the community — a prompt to verify
  • Another option, if notifications fail to send to an email, generate a report — maybe then we could lockout until email is updated at next login?

Hi! Any chance there is an update on the idea of seeing the email address in users own profile (so each user can see his or hers email address, but no-one else)?

Can I vote for this +100 times? I came to the community today to request this, and secondarily we need the ability to merge profiles. Since members can’t currently edit their primary email address, when they move companies they often create a second profile. This would happen a lot less if they could just update their email addresses on their own.

We use SSO so a lot of what is being discussed here is not possible for us - however since the OpenID identifier is exposed and editable for us, we can switch a customer back to their old profile with a new email address. Its an administrative pain but at least its possible - it still creates a hassle by having the customer create a new profile then we swap their OpenID identifier, but a good workaround if you have SSO enabled.

When things get tough, we ask, what is best for the customer?

Hey we would also benefit from the implementation of this idea. We have a community that is made of active and former employees and thus former employees have no longer access to their professional email address. We would thus like to provide them with the opportunity to edit the email address that is linked to their account at any time.

We use a combination of SSO and local login. If a user has a professional email address linked to their profile, they will be able to connect through SSO, if their email address changes to something else they'll just be able to connect locally.

I would really like this feature as well… even though we just launched our community, I already know a few members that are switching jobs in the near future and they asked my if they can keep their existing account but just simply update their email address themselves. But as they don't see it, it's not that easy.

Workaround that I now have set up is, that we have a KI in our resources that explains that if they want to switch their email address to a new one, they should just email out community team. But it's not really user friendly.

Yeah same workaround.

I had worked on an automation in the past:

  • Created a text field on user profiles that act as the email field visible to users
  • Webhook triggered when that field changes
  • API call to update the actual email field using the text entered in that text field

But I never implemented it because it missed:

  • when an admin modifies the actual email field, there are no webhooks that are triggered to update the text field
  • doesn't prevent users from misspelling their email address and thus updating the email field with a wrong email address

Thanks for sharing this idea. As of now will not be able to purpose this idea further due to other priorities. We will park this idea for now
