Mobile responsive Control

Thanks for posting this! We are really interested in how many votes this will gather.

Can I ask which are the features that you would most want to interact with on mobile?

In some ways, I can probably predict the future and read @timcavey ‘s mind before he even notices this Idea, but I would definitely agree with this one.

In my personal view, I’d probably put basic moderation functions right at the top of the wish list for this one, since they’re probably the most commonly used functions and are also the ones that would benefit more Control users than everything else. So if it were me, I’d probably vote for the Community and Users sections to get the mobile friendly treatment first. :)

Making huge changes to admin level settings is the sort of thing I’d argue is best done on a computer with a keyboard and mouse, especially if it involves configuring integrations, going off-platform temporarily, playing with API Keys or anything else that involves copy/pasting and precision. You can probably make them mobile friendly too, but I’d vote for them to be lower down my wish list if it were me.

I’ve actually got a pretty good example of this as well. At the charity I do the IT for, I use a cloud based platform to help me run the show. It’s somewhat similar to others out there except for certain unique features that I need for my use case. But that’s for another time. There is some relevance here though, so bear with me.

My main way of managing it is via the web console and I generally use my laptop for that. From there, I have full access to basically everything and it’s also where I can do pretty much anything. Changing settings, pushing updates, checking the status and all the other usual stuff you can expect. But it's not very mobile friendly, so I mainly use that when I have my laptop with me.

When I’m on the go, I use the app on my phone to keep an eye on things in a more mobile friendly way. While I can’t use the app to change settings and the options in the app are a bit more cut-down than in the web console, the app does give me access to all the important stuff that I would need to have around at all times and I am able to do the most common tasks via the app that I’m likely to need when I’m say, fixing a workstation in person. I don’t mind not being able to change settings, because that’s the sort of thing which is best suited to being done via a computer anyway. I can also use the app to login to the web console via QR Code Login too, which is pretty neat and great for security!

This kind of strategy works really well for me because I will always have the critical tools at my fingertips all the time, combined with the full power of the main system available if I need it.

If I was to convert that strategy to inSided, you can probably get an idea of how my vision would work. Mobile friendly Control has all the crucial stuff that you always need rapid access to, full desktop friendly Control for everything else. :)

I also really like the idea of logging in with a QR code from the desktop for added security and ease of use. An area you haven’t mentioned but I wonder if you thought about it is ‘Analytics’. Is that also something you’d like to use on-the-go or not?

I’m actually not like the vast majority of members here, for I’m actually not a customer myself, nor a moderator anywhere. I’m actually just a user. Albeit a user who has been granted special exemptions from the usual rules here. 

I don’t have access to Control anywhere myself, but I’ve managed to figure out most of it from documentation and discussions I’ve come across. But that does mean that I actually have the ability to give my views from a perspective that not many other members here can. XD

With that being said, I would be a little unsure about Analytics as a priority on Mobile. It’s something that I would probably put somewhere in the middle of my priority list if I was using Control, since it’s a little more important than changing all the settings, but not quite as crucial as basic moderation functionality. So for me, I’d set down my priority list for mobile friendliness as being something like this as a rough example:

1. Basic moderation actions (moving threads, editing/deleting comments, banning spammers and other stuff that comes under the Users and Community sections)
2. Analytics - since it might be handy to track this on the go
3. Settings - most of which are probably best done from a computer anyway
4. Customisation - I don’t really think it’s going to be particularly easy to make this one mobile friendly!

And yep, QR Code Login is amazing for bypassing keystroke logging malware or shoulder surfers at a café. I use it a lot with the cloud platform I manage my IT stuff with.

Added my vote 🙋. Yes please to this. We have not yet launched and only have a handful of active users on the platform. Already I’m in need of full mobile control while I’m not at my desktop (ie. cooking dinner, on the school run 😄) - it’s only going to get busier!

Yes please. We dont need moderation tools but admin tools definitely. Settings and for example updating the Quick links, Featured topics and so on.

We really appreciate the thoughtful discussion here, especially the breakdown of moderation vs. admin config use cases. However, a mobile-responsive Control panel is not something we're planning to invest in in the near future.
