There is a content type that sits between a Discussion, an Idea, a Document… which are on-platform status updates.

Typically I’d love people sharing:

  • Manual badges they they are given (see  LinkedIn style) which in turn re-inforces that program that I want to drive on the Community
  • Or causal everyday fun status updates which makes the Community more human, for e.g. wishing someone else on their birthday
  • Out of Office notes for the member

Status updates should have the capability of:

  • @mentioning people
  • Rich text with hyperlinking and embedding images, gifs, etc
  • Searchable
  • Interactable: Comments, Likes, share
  • Show on the profile mouseover card, on the person’s profile page, as well as in the general all-content feed

@anirbandutta feels like it should be the CTA in the email that notifies you of a badge for example: “Share with the community”!
I like it!

Hey @anirbandutta, thanks for sharing! These are great ideas for a status-like topic. Would love to hear how other communities would make use of such a content type. :bulb:

Yes @anirbandutta in my experience this content type is major driver of organic engagement. The ability to provide short form posts used to exist in community platforms like Jive but is absent from most modern providers. Which is so odd, b/c conventional tools like LinkedIn, Facebook, Slack, etc all treat conversations this way. Allowing users to post what they are up to or what they are thinking about without a subject line and a bunch of meta data taking up real estate in the discussion makes online conversations more natural and removes barriers to engagement.

@Cristina to your use case query, when I’ve had this feature in the past, status updates showed up in the same content feed as discussions and questions. Users used the status update to do things like:

  • Promote something they’d written
  • Share their excitement about an upcoming event
  • Post a picture of the ducks they saw on the way to work :-)
