Private Messages: Enable attachments

Related products:CC Moderation
For service-oriented communities it's a regular occurrence to move a conversation to private messages in order to obtain customer information or data. Right now it is not possible to attach images (the WYSIWYG editor isn't activated for private messaging), PDFs or any other file types to a private message.

We would like to be able to have attachments for the standard file types (jpg, png, pdf, txt) enabled to private messages.

Hi @Suvi Lehtovaara and others. We don’t have any updates around this idea at the moment. Although we’re considering some minor investment in private messages this year, it’s more likely we’ll tackle needs that we perceive as more fundamental - for instance, improving user safety on the platform, along the lines of the following idea.

Attachments (and a full WYSIWIG) are so critical when helping customers troubleshoot application issues as it enables them to share screenshots, videos, etc. of their issues in a non-public forum. Personally feel this needs more support as a priority.

Attaching files/images in DMs is so important!

@Julian our users are really starting to request this - would this be on roadmap any time soon? Supporting what @Scott Baldwin and others says above: this is important

Hello! Our members are very interested in this. As one of them put it, being able to DM images will help to “relay messages, communicate, and collaborate in this community.” Really hope this feature gets actioned!

Hi everyone, chiming in here. While this specific request is not on this year’s roadmap, we have planned updates for the Private Messages feature where we are adding API support and AI Moderation Agent. When we do a broader upgrade to private messages, we will absolutely consider this.

One of our super users reached out to me today about this because she’s DMing with someone in the community trying to troubleshoot an issue that includes screenshots with sensitive/private information that they don’t want to share publicly.

The workaround of adding the image to an external site isn’t reasonable for our super users, since many community members don’t necessarily have access to private image hosting, and since the images contain sensitive information they cannot be hosted publicly. It also complicates the troubleshooting process, and adds another level of friction to exchanges that are already often technical and challenging.
