Reputation, points, and rank to erode over time for inactive members

Related products: CC Gamification & Engagement

I read a really good blog that pointed out how much better it can be for gamification metrics like points, reputations and ranks to erode slowly over time.

Example:

If a member earned a high reputation 24 months ago by posting lots, getting ‘likes’ and best answers, and then goes quiet, their score should start to drop over time.

That way it’s clear to members that they’re no longer a voice of authority, a reliable source for help, and a valuable member, at least, not as much as they were 2 years before.

It rewards the consistent member, and it helps newbies rise to the top, above the legacy members.

Thoughts on this welcome!

This is an interesting idea!

Our community is over 15 years old and we do still have rather active members that have been with us ever since the beginning. Some of them have been less and less active over the last two-three years, but the still carry “Superhero”-ranks… We’ve been discussing with our team that less-active superusers should probably be removed their superuser status.. So why not lessen their ranks also?

I like this @timcavey:relaxed:

Thanks for sharing this idea and your insights. The use case is pretty clear: help distinguish the recent active users from people who drifted away and encourage continuous engagement in the community.

I’d put this idea to ‘open’ and let it collect more votes and feedback. :)

Would 100% love this and came to add my own use case. Our org has an annual convention that includes an award ceremony for customers. We announced the Community at the 2023 conference and decided to add an award for the top Community member each year along with acknowledging the top runners up. We noticed that several in the top 5 were extremely active in the first two months launch but then never came back but were at the top due to their activity.

An attrition of points based on months of inactivity would be phenomenal!

I could see specifying points lost if no visit in past month/quarter, and the ability to add more points for subsequent points.

So the longer you are gone the more points you could lose. Of course it could be a toggle so that Communities that didn’t want it could ignore it.
