Use badges to trigger user roles/ranks

I would like to have the ability to trigger a rank to be awarded when a certain badge ie earned. Use case: Superuser is awarded a badge which allows them to level up a rank & user role, allowing them access new content/access.

I have seen this work well in other communities as a way to engage and encourage folks, espeically your top advocates!

Thanks @LizZaps !

Don’t forget to upvote your own Ideas too! :sunglasses:

I can definitely see use cases here as well. Personally, I would recommend making sure that this can only be triggered in the appropriate circumstances that you define - as you probably don’t want Super User related badges being awarded to a new member! But yup, it definitely has it’s uses, such as when a certain forgetful @timcavey never remembers to issue the right badges...

One question though, @LizZaps - why not just adapt the rules for that given role/rank, so that the same behavior triggers the badge and the rank?

That’s easy to answer.

If you have to set it up in two places, it means you have to maintain it in two places and remember to make the changes on both sides. So that also means if you were to change the settings that gives out the role, you’d also need to change the badge. Not quite ideal. And it’s also prone to users forgetting to make the changes on both sides, especially a certain moderator I know of…

Being able to set up one trigger that fires both the badge and rank/role at once is much easier on the user and creates a better UI/UX for community managers who want to have both sides aligned with each other. That’s where this idea comes from.

It also provides another way to “rank up” that doesn’t directly rely on how many points you have. :sunglasses:

Thanks for sharing this idea @LizZaps - would you expect to be able to combine the badge with other criteria or would simply receiving the badge be the only condition for the rank?

Hi @daniel.boon ! I would be looking for the badge alone to trigger the rank (that way I can customize when/how the badge is awarded). Thanks!

Hi @LizZaps and @Blastoise186 for adding this feature, and for the additional color on badge/rank. We are currently exploring building on our gamification and tying it in to our other domains (ie. Academy courses/certifications). Is it possible to have more than one rank in the Community?

For example, if we wanted to give someone a Tutor rank for completing 1 certification, 5 courses, 10 replies in Community and 3 answers, but they’re also a Partner (with a Partner rank), would one override the other, or would they be able to have two?

Would love to hear your thoughts on how you think about ranks in general, as that piece doesn’t seem as clear to me, but badges seem pretty straightforward.

Thanks for the feedback and the idea! We don't have plans to work on it this year, so we'll be parking this idea for now and will revisit it later.
