User Role Filters for Badge Criteria

My use case: 

I use a lot of badges that “level up” (or evolve like pokemon 😎), encouraging community members to keep doing more of the activity that earned them the badge. To avoid clutter on their profiles, I revoke the earlier level and issue the new level. 

Most of the time these are manual use cases (ex. monthly points winner), but my latest use case was the first time I tried automated badges for activity within on specific category. That’s when I ran into a problem…

I built a Zapier automation to revoke the previous badge. Simple enough using the webhooks and API operations. However… the automated badge criteria keeps re-issuing the earlier level badges. 

Level 1 is for 5 answers in that category. Level 2 is for 10. And so on…

1. User earns level 1 for 5 answers
   • Automated PM about the badge
2. User earn level 2 for 10 answers
   • Automated PM about the badge
3. Zap revokes level 1 badge
4. Automated badge criteria re-issues the badge
   • Automated PM about the badge

Solution with this Idea

If I could use custom roles in the automated badge criteria, I could update my Zap to also add a custom role when they receive the badge the first time. And then the automated badge would exclude them going forward (because they have the custom role)

The main use cases I can imagine being more prominent for other communities is limit badges to only certain roles or ranks.

It allows for path-building and persona-based gamification.
