Hello Scott, populating multi-select dropdown fields via Rules Engine ….. I can see from community posts this has been a challenge for years for a number of folks.  I found just 1 suggested approach here Populating multi-select picklist through a rule | Gainsight Community.

I got into building via that approach and stopped midstream because I’m not sure it works for my use case.  I wanted to verbally run by you what I’m looking to do before proceeding further.

Summary:

For each closed won opportunity, I want to derive the Product Names purchased in that opportunity and then populate a MDA multi-select dropdown list with them.

I have 28 possible products that may be purchased.  The dropdown list contains each of them.

In order to populate a multi-select dropdown list the FIRST time, I have to pass a string list separated by semi colons into the field, using Transformation/concat.

If I were to need to UPDATE that list in the future, I’d have to first fetch the existing values and then again derive and pass the current values using the same method.

Before I get to this step of deriving the string, I have to fetch which products were purchased for each opportunity.  That comes out to 1 record per opp/product, often leading to multiple rows per opp.  From those I need to get them into a single record somehow.

I’m on the verge of saying this isn’t something we can realistically maintain long-term; before I do wanted to get your thoughts on possible methods I’m not aware of.
