Update Thu 8 April:
This change was successfully released on Tuesday 6 April 2021. Changing the category of a topic no longer sends a ‘new topic’ notification for users who are subscribed to that category.

We’re changing the behaviour of the ‘change category’ moderator action. When any topic is moved to a different category, a ‘new topic’ notification will no longer be sent to users who are subscribed to the category.

The aim is to enable you as moderators and community managers to silently move content between community categories. That means no more stress / worries about spamming end users when you’re doing a category restructure.

This new behaviour applies both when changing the category of a topic from the moderation overview, as well as directly from the topic moderation page.

Changing a topic’s category via the moderation overview (bulk action)
Changing a topic’s category via the topic moderation page (for an individual topic)

Some of you may remember that a long time ago we published the following product research article on this topic.

We concluded that the notification behaviour was generally unhelpful except in a few edge cases where superusers could see email notifications about new topics. As a result, we decided that it would be most effective to completely remove the notification. In addition, we felt the notification that the topic is ‘new’ is simply not accurate, since it’s  been moved from another category and has not been newly posted.

Please let us know if you have any feedback or questions.

Nice one!

And with this change alone, you’ll probably reduce the number of emails inSided pumps out by quite a considerable margin - which will also help to improve sender reputation and anti-spam scores with a bunch of email providers.

After all, no-one wants 1,000+ emails flooding their inbox all at once...

We released this on Tuesday as planned. We hope your end users enjoy the sound of silence as moderators change the category of topics  😌

Just in time for our big restructure as well - thanks @daniel.boon!

I’m still getting a pop-up telling me subscribers will be notified

I assume this statement (All subscribers
will be notified about this change) is incorrect? I just tried testing it and didn’t get an email notification myself ...

Hey @LPortalupi sorry for the late reply and thanks for sharing this - this was something we missed whilst rolling the feature out. The message has now been updated to specify what actual happens (no notifications to subscribers of the category).

Hey @daniel.boon @olimarrio it would be cool if this feature would be brought back but with a checkbox or something suggesting the moderator to notify or not subscribers

we sometimes have users who misplace their post and we have to move them to the right category, however the post will be kinda forgotten about as non of the experts/subscribers have been notified
.
