Weā€™ve introduced a new unsubscribe email variable in our system emails - you can configure this variable toĀ enable end users to unsubscribe from an email notification type, withoutĀ having to sign in.

MakingĀ it easy forĀ email recipients to easily unsubscribe from certain email notifications is a well-establishedĀ best practice. Previously, end users ofĀ inSided had to log in, find theĀ notification settings page,Ā and change their email preferences. With our new one-click unsubscribes, you can include a link in the email template that lets end users unsubscribe in one click from the type of notification they received.

ā± Donā€™t delay, add the new unsubscribe variable to your email templatesĀ today!

How to add one-click unsubscribe links to your system emails

Ā

  1. Log in to Control as an Administrator/Community Manager.
  2. Navigate to Email > System Emails.
  3. For the following email templates (@mention;Ā New topic;Ā New reply;Ā Private message;Ā Topic answered;Ā Is your problem solved):Ā include the new {unsubscribe_url}Ā variable as a link for end users to click on, e.g.: <a href="{unsubscribe_url}">Unsubscribe</a>
  4. Make sure you press ā€˜Save changesā€™ to update each email template as you go along.

Hereā€™s a reference table to help you identify which emails this new variable is available for, and also where it is not available and why:Ā

Helpful resources / FAQ

Does each notification type have its own unsubscribe option/behaviour?

Yes, each typeĀ notification has its own unsubscribe option/behaviour. For example:

  • If a user gets a notification for a new reply in a topic, theĀ user can unsubscribe in one click fromĀ all new reply email notificationsĀ from the community.
  • If a user gets a notification for a new @mention, the user can unsubscribe in one click from allĀ @mention email notifications from the community.

Weā€™d love to hear your feedback in the replies, or any questions you have about this new functionality āœØ.

Is this accompanied by analytics on who subscribed/unsubscribed?

Thanks for your question @CommunityKaila! We still donā€™t expose analytics for system emails at the moment. However, we made sure that weā€™re storing this data from day one, so that when we make email analytics available in the future, thereā€™ll be an immediate dataset to work from.

This is actually a pretty neat little idea. @timcaveyĀ I think youā€™ve got some homework tonight my friend!

@daniel.boonĀ Is there rough timeline on analytics? If we have the data, can we request a raw version of it?

Ā

I realize that a dashboard would take time to develop but I would like to use the analytics to create an engagement for our customers who are not yet subscribed to receive Product Updates. At the moment I am unable to do so because it seems silly to send an email blast around subscribing to a particular forum when they may have done so already.Ā

Ā

HI @daniel.boonĀ nice feature this.Ā

Ā

Can you provide more clarity on where we should be adding the new HTML?

Ā

Should it replace any of the copy relating to unsubscribing?Ā

It depends a little bit on how youā€™ve got your templates set up @timcaveyĀ - if you already have instructions on unsubscribing, then definitely Iā€™d replace the copy and addĀ this new variable.

My generic recommendation is:

  • Add a line at the end of the email to help the user unsubscribe from the type of notification theyā€™re receiving, e.g.Ā ā€˜UnsubscribeĀ if you donā€™t want to receive any @mention notifications from the community.ā€™Ā This should use the new {unsubscribe_url} variable.
  • Also include another lineĀ after that one. ā€˜Manage your email notification preferences.ā€™, linking to the <your-community.com>/settings/general URL.
  • For the new reply emails in particular, Iā€™d also recommend including a line along the lines of ā€˜Donā€™t want notifications about this topic anymore? Remove it from your list of subscriptionsā€™.

Hope that helps :)

Hi, thatā€™s a good new feature and it makes it easier for users to unsubscribe from emails. I have one question: It is now possible to unsubscribe from the ā€œIs your problem solvedā€ email. But this option doesnā€™t appear on the ā€œsettings/generalā€ page where users can control their notification in one go. Will this option be added on this page?

And a follow-up question: Can you give me the ā€œmoduleā€ andĀ ā€œkeyā€ values to alter the phrase for the success page for unsubscribing from ā€œIs your problem solvedā€?

(I could trigger all the other notifications pages, but this notification is sent automatically after X days, unlike the others which can be triggered manually.)

Good questionĀ @bjoern_schulze. End users opt out of this email notificationĀ using the existing profile setting:Ā ā€œReceive email notifications from your topic subscriptionsā€. If a user unsubscribes from the individual question itself, then the email will also not be sent (copied from ourĀ help doc, for reference). We donā€™t have any short-term plans to change this.

oEdited: just saw the other question]

And a follow-up question: Can you give me the ā€œmoduleā€ andĀ ā€œkeyā€ values to alter the phrase for the success page for unsubscribing from ā€œIs your problem solvedā€?

Iā€™ve asked the team if we can retrieve those values for you :)

At the moment I am unable to do so because it seems silly to send an email blast around subscribing to a particular forum when they may have done so already.Ā

I checked with the team/support and although we store the data, itā€™s unfortunatelyĀ not in a format that would be easy to retrieve in a usable format on a recurring basis. Your use case is however clear, and I agree that thereā€™s a product gap here when it comes to increasing engagement with product updates.

For anyone else who is interested in the same data, hereā€™s @CommunityKailaā€™s idea which you can vote on:

Thanks for that specific advice, @daniel.boonĀ - thatā€™s nice and clear.Ā

Ā

Iā€™ve been able to update the following email comms:

Ā

@mention;Ā New reply;Ā Private message;Ā Topic answered;Ā Is your problem solved)

Ā

I wasnā€™t able to find the ā€˜new topicā€™ email notification. I assume this is sent to anyone whoā€™s subscribedĀ to a category with new activity.Ā

Ā

Any tips on how to find this?

Hi @timcaveyĀ

Ā

Yes thatā€™s right, you can find ā€˜New topicā€™ templatesĀ in your system emails below:

Ā

Are you able to see this from your control on your side?

Ā

Iā€™ve added the {unsubscribe_url} variable for you now.Ā

Thanks @olimarrioĀ - it turns our I was editing these in the legacy ā€˜phrasesā€™ section.Ā

Ā

Thanks for the help!

Legacy, Tim?!?!

Time to modernise I think! So far, this feature is definitely working brilliantly, but the only snag is that it seems to be impossible for the user to re-enable mention emails if they disable them. Is this just a missing setting or did someone forget to build one?Ā :joy:

@Blastoise186Ā on the profile/settings page it should beĀ possible to adjust the @mentionĀ email notification setting :)

Ā

Ah yes. Itā€™s enabled here for me, but somehow disabled on OVO for weird reasons.

Can I borrow your inSider Super Powers for a sec and see if youā€™re able to force that setting to have visible paint by any chance? I donā€™t think Tim will mind too much.

I have noticed the exact same issue, @Blastoise186Ā - we donā€™t have this ā€˜receive email notifications from mentionsā€™ option in our ā€˜Settingsā€™ profileā€¦..Ā

Iā€™ve actually had a look through the page source over there as well. I canā€™t even find any traces of that setting existing in the code either. Or at least not that I can find with Chrome DevTools...

Sorry about this @daniel.boonĀ but I think either me or Tim has managed to break something!

Odd one ā†’ Iā€™ve created a support ticket on your behalfĀ to resolve thisĀ @Blastoise186Ā @timcavey.

@JulianĀ has created a more detailed guide on how to add this to notification emails - be sure to check it out if youā€™re unsure of how to go about doing this / feel that youā€™re not technical enough!

Ā

@bjoern_schulzeĀ I added a section with all of the phrase keys to Julianā€™s articleĀ - hope it helps!

If a user does not mean to unsubscribeĀ or wants to re-subscribe. Do we have the ability to re-subscribe them?

Hi @Hannah BaileyĀ ,

Yup, thatā€™s possible. But for reasons that I hope youā€™ll understand, the user in question would have to re-subscribe on their own - thereā€™s no remote control option to do this on their behalf.

If they accidentally unsubscribed just from a particular topic, simply head over there and subscribe again. If itā€™s from all emails of that type, theyā€™ll need to head into their settings. In the case of inSpired, the direct link isĀ https://community.insided.com/settings/generalĀ . You can replace the domain with the one for your community and it should work fine.

From there, simply turn the notifications back on and click save. Changes should be processed within a few seconds.

@Kenneth R, @revathimenon,Ā and team.
