New topic, choose category. Why all the categories are listed?

I havent thought this before but one of our user reported this:

User wrote, that when he/she starts new topic, it is difficult to find correct category to where to publish topic. Later on user added, that in the Category listing there are bunch of categories but it isnt possible to publish new topics in all of them.

And yes, it is true. I tested this here as well, when choosing Category I can see, for example “Community news” category, but I cant publish new topic there:

This is confusing. Also, when there are bunch of categories, it would be better UX if there is only visible the categories when user have rights to publish new topics there.

Is there anything I can do?

And, what is phrase to translate that error in Finnish?

Support said this has bug been fixed.

I’m seeing things working as intended as well.

  1. On my community, users only see the forums they have permissions to post to
  2. Here on the GS community, I’m no longer seeing some forums I used to see as options (community news) that I didn’t actually have permissions for.

If you are still having an issue with this, please create a support ticket.

It’s supposed to respect permissions and hide the categories they don’t have permission for posting. And it did previously, I believe. So perhaps it’s a bug?

I’ll need to test on my community to see if this is happening, but I haven’t heard anything.

I think this is how it should work but I dont know how this have been earlier?

I hope it is a bug, then it should be easy to fix!

Same issue on my community. I submitted a support ticket (#363681) to report the bug.

I only see this where they have “Category Visibility” checked but not “Create Topics” and “Create Replies”. Once my tester tries to post they get the error message. There maybe a better way but suspect this has been like this all along.

I agree with Danny.

Seems like a bug on our platform too & I’m gonna raise this internally as well.

@revote did you get a chance to raise a ticket for the same on your community?

No, I hoped we will get this fixed as well, because this seems to be general bug in the platform.

Hey @revote and @DannyPancratz - thanks for reporting this issue.

I’ve been trying to reproduce the issue but haven’t had any success. Is this still happening on your end? I’ve tested both custom and primary roles, and the categories in the dropdown are being hidden as expected.

Yes, it's still happening.

Testing is a pain for me on our community due to our SSO and no ability to spoof another user. But I can see this bug still happening on the Gainsight community itself. Community News is not a category I have permissions to post to. This is what I see:

Community News shows up as a category I could post in, despite not having permissions
Error message confirming I cannot post there

Thank you @DannyPancratz @revote - I will do some more tests now and follow up with you on the tickets and also post here.
