Allow customization of meta descriptions of topics

This idea was generated when it became clear that the meta descriptions of topics are automatically populated by Insided, without edit access, and aren’t accurate. Thread here:

Yoeri

We’re using an analytics tool called Conductor, which displays what Google sees as headers, H2s, H3 etc. Well some of the info Google is getting from our page’s source code isn’t great.

Example here:

If we can’t change meta descriptions for topics, is there any way for Insided to improve this from a platform point of view?

Oh yeah, that’s a very relevant pair of H2 meta descriptions there! :joy: I had absolutely no idea that Anti-Virus products had learnt to ride bikes!

But yeah, this could be a good SEO improvement, provided it doesn’t get abused. However, it’s also worth noting that I think Google is usually smart enough to figure out whether any part of the meta description is included by mistake and discard it. But with The Algorithm being so secretive these days, it’s hard to know for sure. I would say however that excessive fiddling can potentially hurt more than help.

@timcavey Thank you for posting this as an idea. It is an issue that could definitely be improved. May I ask what the desired functioning would be? For individual topics: fill out meta descriptions automatically but also be able to modify them? Or rather just improve the way meta description is filled automatically?

Hi @Ati Somos

Filling them out automatically and allowing modification option is ideal, so the content key words can be targeted for SEO.

However if that’s more work then improving the automated system, that would be a great start. For example, why not have it so anything labeled as a small heading or a large heading in the main topic body copy, is assumed to be a meta description…?

Chiming in here to say we’d love this feature to be available. Working with our SEO Manager we’ve found some community member posts that would benefit from improved visibility.
