What are some best practices around expiring NPS scores from years past in order to keep relevancy (ie.when to remove old scores )?

My recommendation would be to keep your old scores as a measure against which you show progress. Perhaps condensing them into year-over-year comparisons, at some point.

We don't retire our scores as we like to see if things have gotten worse or better over time for a specific customer.
