See who else from your organization has joined the community

Onomatopoeia

Hey everyone,

During our pre-launch early access program, our testers came up with these two related ideas that I’d love to be able to implement:

  • “What if, when someone joins the community, the platform was able to show them other people from their organization who had already joined?”
  • “Is there a way that we can alert other community members that someone from their organization just joined the community - with a call to action to say hello?”

Both of these ideas add social proof to the community and add comfort to the hardest part of any community member’s journey - the first interaction.

I imagine an implementation of this would look something like grouping members together based on the domain of their email address, then triggering PMs or banners when someone with the same domain joins?

Love this idea. Common ones other platforms do are from same org and from same city/location.

There’s probably some ways to do this with the API, but you’d have to lookup and return the dataset which may not be simple to do. And since many folks signup for communities using their personal emails, it may be challenging to identify that they are part of a particular org.

Yeah I can see that would be tough to achieve @Scott Baldwin. Less so for us since we use our brand SSO as the only login method.

I think a good way of “matching” members like this would be through the user profile fields. I think the core of this idea is about ways we can automate an immediate connection between community members with a shared interest, right from the moment they join.

Good idea @Onomatopoeia ! Thanks for sharing with us. This actually matches with our vision, similar ideas have been discussed internally as well.:)

To everyone who are interested in this idea, here’s a small brainstorm: besides add social proof and encourage the first interaction (nice ideas :)), anything else you’d like to see if a community user can belong to a company or an organisation?

@xiaoyu-shen

  • For anyone with a Salesforce integration - a link in the Users area of control to the Salesforce account.
  • If we’re getting REAAAAALLLY CRAAZY up in here, a “My Network” page where the user can see who else from their org is active in the community, other members they’ve followed and a feed of their contributions, badges, ranks etc. It’s getting a bit “social media-y” at that point so feel free to sprinkle liberally with salt.
