Filter/sort by TOPIC TYPE in category forums

In categories, you can currently filter/sort by Most replies, most views, or newest first. I’d like to also be able to filter by topic type. That might look like adding these options:

  • Questions
  • Conversations
  • Articles

Use case: Categories that want to be a one-stop shop for different types of content, including articles.

You can publish articles to a community category (and I have use cases for doing so), it’d be great to be able to filter by articles.

Without it, it requires manual curation of featured articles at the top of the program, or rolling up the list in an article (more manual curation).

@DannyPancratz

Are you able to share your specific use case for articles IN categories?

I am interested to hear HOW the article Content type is being utilized?

@Alistair FIeld Sure. We have a new forum around sharing Best Practices. Some members have taken to publishing “conversation” posts that are more like short articles of their POV. It doesn’t really require conversation, it’s more of an article. When those come in, I convert them to articles. This gives me the content helpfulness rating widget, as well as a more accurate reflection of the types of posts in that forum.

But the use case that inspired this idea: We have a separate category for webinar and event recordings. But those recordings align closely to our community discussion forums. I am considering moving the “articles” that host those videos into the actual discussion forum itself, as a one stop repository of things on that topic: articles, videos, conversations, and questions.

Being able to sort or filter by topic type, would make that a better experience. Otherwise my options are to publish that content in a separate KB or community category. I understand that’s how Insided is designed, but I’m considering if an alternative information architecture makes more sense for our users.

Rather than:

  • Community Forums (categories)
    • Subject 1 questions/conversations
    • Subject 2 questions/conversations
    • Subject 3 questions/conversations
  • KB or Community category for event recordings
    • Subject 1 webinar recordings
    • Subject 2 webinar recordings
    • Subject 3 webinar recordings

Just:

  • Categories
    • Subject 1
    • Subject 2
    • Subject 3

But to do that, it’d be good to easily surface the articles that are posted in category.

FWIW, I also think it’d be interesting to be able to filter by questions and conversations.

Hi @DannyPancratz, thanks for sharing your idea! Currently we are working on defining some new widgets with filter options as you requested, but you are asking it to include as part of category page on sort options. Idea is clear.

I’ll still put this idea to 'open' to collect more votes and feedback.
