Differentiate Subscribe / Unsubscribe button

Daniele Cmty

Hello Dear community,

Me (and esp. our users) find the “Subscribe” button a bit confusing.

at first sight, it’s hard to tell whether or not you are subscribed and it’s not really intuitive.

I think there are better solutions: e.g. most websites have the “Subscribe” button, then I click it, and it turns to “Unsubscribe”.

this is the view when I’m not subscribed

this is the view when I’m subscribed

The way things are right now, If I am subscribed (but anaware) and want to subscribe to this post, I would click on the “subscribe” button, but that would actually UNSUBSCRIBE me

Does anybody have a workaround or any solution or advice for this?

Hope it’s not too confusing, the way I described it!

Cheers:)

Hi @Daniele Cmty

I understand your points above as to how the subscribe button can be a little confusing. I’m curious to hear if any other customers have the same thoughts or possible workarounds. If there are no viable workarounds, I believe this post should become an idea.

Since this is a great piece of product feedback, I will tag @Cristina here, so she can review your feedback.

Hello @Daniele Cmty I totallyunderstand your point. There could be indeed some confusion.

I wonder if the colors here could help to make the current status a bit clear. In any case this can be improved. I will leave this idea to gather some votes. Thanks a lot for sharing this feedback.

We have had quite a bit of feedback from our community members about this -- they don’t think there is enough difference in the two button states for clarity.

I find it quite odd, and have to occasionally remind myself, that the star filled in = subscribed. I frequently click multiple times just to make sure it has taken affect. The fill on the star is not easy to discern and doesn’t really mean anything to me as an indicator. If the star changed to a checkmark that would be more useful, but I’d prefer the word to actually change to “unsubscribe.”

My solution is waiting for the item I put on our marketing team’s backlog to somehow over write this with our own custom styling :(

Hey @Laura D. thanks a lot for raising this. I totally agree and we actually have a ticket ready to make that change, as this is not great UX indeed. We are hoping to pick this up very short term . We will update the phrase to say "Unsubscribe".

Here is recap of what to expect (FYI @Daniele Cmty ):

For similar reasons, we used the phrasing tool to change Subscribe to “Get Email Updates.”

Relatedly, I added this idea.

Hello @DannyPancratz @Daniele Cmty @Laura D. @Scott Baldwin @Julia_M @aluciani @Melissa @chris

@alex.maks

I wanted to let you know we partially delivered this idea :) . When clicking on "Subscribe" the button becomes "Unsubscribe" and the icon gets filleds. For consistency we also updated "Like" to become "Unlike".

To note if you had already updated those phrases you won't see the change @Scott Baldwin

I marked this idea as only partially delivered as we want to improve the performance of the button. For now the button takes a while to update from Subscribe" to "Unsubscribe" and vice versa so we are working to improve that. Please share if you have any feedback on this already :)

Great news, thanks!
The Like/Unlike is perfect!

Subscribe/Unsubscribe

I can see there is a delay (just under a second) that could make users think that the “click” didn’t work → so they might click it again, just to discover that they just unsubscribed and the first click worked after all.

→ So after testing it out a few times, I think most users will just naturally understand that they have to wait a bit and not click multiple times. Which is fine!

Would of course be nice if the switch happened immediately (just like the Like / Unlike) but the little delay is not a deal-breaker for me. So overall I’m happy with it! 😊

What do the others think?

Upvote

I wonder if you ever plan to also implement this for the Upvote button? e.g. “Upvote / Upvoted”.
Or if you deliberately decided against it?

Cheers and happy holiday!

Nice to hear this is partially delivered.

@Daniele Cmty I like the idea of upvote, how would you like to see it deployed?

What do you exactly mean by that?

If you’re asking how i would ideally look like for me:

Before an upvote:

After the upvote:

“Upvoted

@Daniele Cmty what types of things would you like upvoted? Would you want to along side topics posted or replies or articles?

I think I have to rephrase:
I wasn’t requesting an additional upvote functionality.

My suggestion was: when upvoting ideas, that the “upvote” button changes the wording “upvoted” to be consistent with the new updates (Subscribe / Unsubscribed & “Like / Unlike”)

😊
