Enable hyperlinks on signatures

I think it'll be useful to enable hyperlinks in signatures, at least for admins, moderators and superusers. This way we can regularly change them to an idea or topic we'd like users to reach - for instance, a feature feedback request.

C'mon InSided, make it possible :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

@Yoeri @daniel.boon we at Zapier are very keen on enabling hyperlinks to signatures as well for a select group of folks. These would be our most vetted participants who, once achieving a certain rank/role would be permitted to link to their profile page on our site (driving revenue + ROI).

Could you share any update on this functionality? Thank you!

@LizZaps Thanks for reaching out on this idea. Currently, I don't have any updates to share as we haven't prioritized it in our short term roadmap. We'll keep you updated once we plan it

Thanks @Marion Frecaut . Can you share steps that inSided users can take to move this up on the priority list? Thank you!

@LizZaps what you are doing by raising the topic again is perfect, it allows other customers to see that idea and upvote it. From what I can see you earn an extra 3 votes so that is good to move it up the priority list.

We are currently testing our community pre-launch with some beta testers and super users. This was among the first questions / suggestions that came up.

With profile updating / creating a signature early in the onboarding process, it’s both a FAQ and low hanging fruit type functionality item that would be good to address over time.

I definitely like the sound of this one! Personally, I’d also agree with locking it down to trusted users only, at least to begin with. Not least to help avoid forum spammers causing even more nightmares as you can’t easily report user profiles right now.

I have seen a few cases where forum spammers have thrown links into their usernames and profile data including signatures, in an attempt to be somewhat sneaky. So having safeguards would definitely be great. I’ll probably consider splitting most of this comment out into a new idea later though

Perhaps it could also be possible to allow regular users to have links in signatures later on, but require moderator approval before they can be made visible if it’s not on a domain whitelist. So for example, if as a Super User, I post any link in my signature, it’s visible straight away on the basis of trust. If I’m a new member but post a link to an approved domain in my signature (such as to inSided or inSpired over here), let that through as well.

Alternatively, if I’m a new member and post links in my signature to domains that aren’t whitelisted, allow the signature to be saved, but send it to a pre-moderation queue for moderator approval before making it go live (possibly showing the rest of the signature?). If the following happens:

  • A moderator approves my signature - make it visible automatically with the option for the moderator to whitelist the domain if they choose
  • I edit my signature to remove all links completely - release the updated version from moderation and make it visible
  • A moderator denies my signature - allow the moderator to either edit and then approve the signature without the links and/or request that I change it and then send it back through moderation

Sharing a quote from one of our members for this suggestion:

The ability to put a link in my signature. Backlinks  is an incentive to visit and post more often.

I think this is an important point of view when considering Gamification. Gamified incentives can and should extend beyond the digital badges or clout they might get from the community; as influencer culture becomes more prominent, people are looking to amplify their personal brands or social channels. Links in signatures or member profiles offers them a great incentive to promote their personal brand and feel like they are getting value from their participation on the community.

It’s also a positive incentive for those who need employer buy-in to support their active participation on the platform. If they can say, “by answering questions and raising awareness of our company and driving traffic, etc,” their participation is more likely to be supported.

I understand that spamming might be a concern or consideration for communities where that is an issue. Perhaps it’s something that might be a toggle for each community to enable/disable.

That’s actually a pretty good use case for it too.

Since it’s something that requires trust anyway, what if you could earn that privilege by having certain roles/ranks/badges be a requirement to unlock this ability?

I’ve seen spammers try to abuse this by putting spammy links straight into signatures before they even start flooding the place. But if things are set up properly, you’d almost certainly have banned such abusers and spammers and wiped out their junk long before they get close to unlocking the privileges of a trusted user.

Upvote on this! I would like to add links to our pricing page and Chrome extension download in our mods’ signatures.

Just noting that we’d like this too. It was the feedback of the very first user to test our community! I think that it could be activated for only a certain custom role (and then that custom role could be managed automatically by the ranking table, if we wished).

The user was looking for a small image and URL. Like a “click here to find out about our training courses” type of thing.
