Hi,

I’m newer to Gainsight so forgive me if this is possible, but in chatting with the Gainsight support team they said it’s currently not and there aren’t existing requests open.

It would be great if fields were editable in various ways after being saved. For example, if the display name could be edited (i.e. not the field_name) or if values in a dropdown list could be edited/added to. It’s very difficult to predict future business needs/changes, and as a result, it’s not entirely feasible to have everything about a field exactly correct when setting it up for all future business cases. From what I understand the workaround is to create a new field, find everywhere the old field is being used and replace it with the new one, but that can require an extreme amount of work and I may end up with a new field name that I don’t want (ex: ‘Risk Status’ becomes ‘Risk Status - New’) as a result of a necessary business change.

If this type of editing is possible, that’s great! If not, I hope it will be considered. From an admin perspective, the way fields are locked down from any sort of editing after their creation causes a lot of future challenges from my vantage point.

Hello @ryan_lehman , you’ll be happy to know that support has lead you astray (ok, maybe not happy about that, just the end result) in that you can edit fields after they are saved.

While there are cases where fields cannot be edited at all (e.g. System Field Types), you can indeed edit the display name and some other details about a field in most other cases.

You can also edit dropdown fields (again, notable exception being System Field Types). While you can’t delete picklist options, you can add new ones, deactivate old ones and even edit them.

Do note that depending on how your filters and dependencies are set up with other systems, even changing labels could cause some stability issues so you wouldn’t want to do it without care, it is possible. Perhaps support was confused and was simply saying in one specific use case it is not possible.

@bradley thank you so much! I realized I was going too far in Data Management for editing the dropdowns and totally missed the ‘Dropdowns’ tab at the top. I was clicking into the object the the field itself is listed on. Thanks again!
