Learner Progress & Resume Behavior: Returning to Last Lesson + Completion Indicators

We’re running a multi-module certification program and have received consistent beta feedback around learner progress visibility and resumption behavior. Specifically:

  1. Resume behavior

    • When a learner exits a course partway through a module and returns later, the platform does not return them to where they left off

    • Instead, it restarts the module from the beginning

  2. Completion indicators

    • Learners do not see a clear visual indicator of which lessons or modules they’ve completed

    • While there are checkmarks/circles in the navigation, they appear the same for all lessons and don’t clearly signal completion at the lesson or module level

Questions:

  • Are either of these behaviors configurable within Skilljar?

  • Have others implemented workarounds (UX patterns, design choices, or structural changes) to improve:

    • “Return to where I left off” behavior

    • Clear lesson/module completion signaling for learners?

  • Or are these known platform limitations that need to be designed around rather than solved directly?

Any insight, examples, or “don’t bother trying X” guidance would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hmm, wondering what types of lessons have in your courses...

For videos (or the File/Web Content lesson type), using the Course Settings > Lesson Navigation > "Mark Lesson Complete When Audio Or Video Is Done" setting facilitates the checkmark in the circle icon. We find that videos that aren't complete don't show the checkmark. Looks like certain embedded media types are not supported though: See the "note" at the bottom of this help article. https://support.gainsight.com/Skilljar/Create/Lessons/Marking_Lessons_Complete_When_Audio_or_Video_is_Done

This article includes some details on lesson completion by type that might help: https://support.skilljar.com/hc/en-us/articles/38190169175821-Understand-course-and-lesson-completion

On a course catalog type page or when viewing a learning path containing multiple courses, completed courses should show the "Completed" tile ribbon. Are people not seeing this? Here's an article we used to customize the ribbon display: https://support.gainsight.com/Skilljar/Develop_and_Customize/Customization_and_Theming/Customize_Course_Tile_Ribbons_using_CSS

When viewing the Course Overview page for registered courses in progress, it should display the count of the lessons completed (e.g., 7 out of 10 lessons completed) at the top and, when the course is resumed, the learner should be taken to the lesson where they left off. I don’t think there are settings you need to enable for this behavior to be in place though. Wondering if you are using a single Scorm asset that contains multiple lessons and that might be part of the challenge? I always get tripped up with the actual learner experience for single scorm assets containing multiple lessons within.

I wanted to mention that this site: https://developer.skilljar.com/page/all-courses includes a lot of hidden code snippets that we have leveraged to work around some specific setup challenges inherent to Skilljar. Sadly, so much of what we need to make the site work the way we want it to requires code snippets.
