We released a new feature that allows moderators to approve new user registrations. When this feature is enabled a moderator must approve or deny a registration before the user can post content on the community.

This is one of the measurements we took to combat spam, as is described in Spam Wars: Return of the Spammers

How to enable moderator approval for new registrations

1. Login to the Control Environment.

2. Navigate to the ā€˜User managementā€™ page under ā€˜General Settingsā€™

3. Set ā€˜Approve new registrationsā€™ to Yes

User guide

New community users will see a ā€œMembership requires approval from moderatorā€ message when they activated their account. At this stage the user is part of the community but he/she canā€™t create topics or reply yet.

Moderators need to approve a registration before the user can create content. Approving new registrations is a simple 3 step process:

1. Navigate to the 'User Overview' under 'General Settings' in the Control Environment

2. Filter on user role: 'Waiting for moderator approval'

3. Open a user profile page and click 'Approve registration'

Upon approval the user will receive an email that his registration is approved, at this stage he/she can create topics and reply.

Great feature but quick clarification - For Private communities, if this feature is enabled will users who are pending Moderator approval be able to see community content? Meaning the community would no longer be Private and would be visible to anyone who takes the time to register, even if they havenā€™t been approved to be created as a user/ given access to the community.Ā

We are using a private community and you can set the visability of content and categories in a way, that users awaiting approval cannot see it. This excludes Events, i couldnā€™t find an option to hide those. Also they can see user names & profiles, rewarded Badges and Leaderboards. We would prefer, if those accounts ā€œawaiting moderator approvalā€ wouldnā€™t have access to the community at all.

Hi @YoeriĀ - Is there any way to have this by custom role? We have users who come over validated as customer and partners that we know wonā€™t spam. Itā€™s just those who register as guest we need to validate further to weed out potential spammers. Thanks!

Hi Chris, this is not configurable by role. The toggle works as a ā€˜check allā€™ once enabled. We donā€™t recommend you to toggle on this feature by default (as it will create extra workload for your community team to check and approve registrations) but only once you are dealing with a serious spam attack.

We have other spam measurements in place, such as the spam filter and rate limiting on new content and new account registrations from the same IP-address. See this post for more information:

If you are not suffering from a large pool of spammers and spam posts I would recommend to disable this setting until its really needed.Ā
