Gamification for Completing Profile Fields

Our registration form is limited: 10 fields and all are tied to important reporting we need on our users.

But, increasingly, it’s a best practice to keep registration forms short and collect some of this information across multiple touch points. For example, the InSpired community’s signup for is half the length of ours.

Ideally, we’d have tools to gamify and incentivize profile onboarding whether points, badges, ranks, etc.

Best case scenario: a way to route them to these fields on one of their first few logins.

Hi @DannyPancratz, thanks for sharing this idea: use a shorter form to help reduce friction during registration.

Our registration form is limited: 10 fields and all are tied to important reporting we need on our users.

If a gamified profile onboarding is available, which fields would you make optional / leave out in the registration form?

And how would it impact the user reporting?

Hi, @xiaoyu-shen. If we could gamify and ensure a second touch point to fill out profile fields, we would simplify our sign up form down to just a few things like name and email.

The types of things we’d leave for later would include:

  • Country
  • Job role (Exec, Manager, Admin, Architect, Developer, etc)
  • [Other persona type info unique to our community]
  • Interest areas

Things like that. That data may seem optional, but it’s critical info we owe our stakeholders and investors to measure how our community is growing. As a result, we have a longer registration form at the outset, as we’re not seeing optional profile fields being completed at the rate we need this data.

Highly key for a Social community to encourage Rich profiles. And there can be missions leading people along.

Just thinking that the level-up to next Rank seems could be more intuitive serving as an indicator of Profile-completeness?

I give this idea my full 100% thumbs up vote too!

I’m only 5 months into having our community, and I’m seeing too many gaps in a large proportion of our members. We already collect a lot of data in the registration, and I concur with @DannyPancratz  points above.

@sarahmasterton-brown some good news, there is a new webhook recently added integration.UserProfileUpdated.

With this, you could build custom gamification for profile updates (not upon initial sign up) using automation tools like Zapier:

  • Webhook trigger for update profile fields
  • Actions
    • Award points
    • Award badges

If you wanted to do something around completing all fields, you could probably add an API call to find the user and do some filter conditions to ensure the required fields are not blank.

Sadly, the #1 thing I’d like to gamify (profile photo / avatars) is not included in this webhook.

@xiaoyu-shen @Alistair FIeld & team, you can probably update this idea to partially delivered or something like that.

wow, this will take some digging into. I’ve not yet ventured into the world of Zapier but I will. Thanks for the input @DannyPancratz
