Granular Permissions/Configuration for Ideation (View, Vote, Comment)

I'd like to request a feature that allows for more granular control over user permissions within the Ideation section, specifically by splitting permissions into "View," "Vote," and "Comment," similar to the existing permission structure in the forum discussion areas. Basically, would like product parity for permissions between forums and ideation.

Current Situation:

Currently, the Ideation section permissions are "all or nothing." If a user has permission to access Ideation, they typically have full access to view, vote, and comment. This lacks the flexibility we require for our community management.

Desired Functionality:

We need to implement a permission system for Ideation that allows us to control "View," "Vote," and "Comment" permissions independently based on both primary and custom role. This would enable us to create custom user roles with specific access levels, like how it is in the discussions.

Use Case & Rationale:

Our community utilizes a multi-tiered user permission system. All registered users initially go through a screening process.

  • "Registered users" (Primary Role): All users upon registration.
  • "Role B" (Custom Role): Registered users who have passed the screening and are granted full posting permissions in forum discussions.
  • "Role C" (Custom Role): Registered users who have not passed the initial screening and are limited to viewing content in forum discussions.

Currently, we can effectively manage these roles in the forum discussion areas. "Role C" users can view but not post, while "Role B" users have full posting capabilities.

However, this granular control is lacking in the Ideation section. We wish to extend the same level of control to Ideation. Specifically, we need to:

  • Allow "Role C" users to view Ideation submissions.
  • Allow "Role B" users to view, vote, and comment on Ideation submissions.

The current "all or nothing" approach prevents us from implementing this refined permission structure and may be impacting our support community’s SEO and discoverability.

Hi @kristineo!

This is part of our roadmap for this year.

You can currently set this granularity in Community and Knowledge Base categories - we are also planning to bring this functionality to the Ideation and Product Updates modules where you will be able to set visibility, topic and reply creation.

I am unsure about the feasibility to grant category visibility to an ideation category while disallowing voting - will have to check internally with the team.

This will also include custom roles.

Please, let me know if this would satisfy your use case.

Hi @hhugo, great news! That would satisfy our use case, glad to hear it’s in the works.

Would you be able to note if this will be in H1 or H2 of this year? This will help us expectation-set with internal stakeholders. But definitely understand if that has to stay under wraps!

@kristineo we are aiming to release categorisation in the Ideation and Product Updates modules in H1 - just keep in mind that leaving a future ideation category visible while disallowing voting for certain users might not be possible, but we will discuss that.

Hello @hugh.ong - when can we expect this to be released? Thank you!

Hi @Lola - I believe that message was perhaps addressed to me.

Our team is now working a different initiative but the biggest next step will be starting to work on Ideation and Product Updates categories - the goal is still to have something (maybe in beta) in H1.

As I mentioned in a previous reply of this topic:

...leaving a future ideation category visible while disallowing voting for certain users might not be possible, but we will discuss that.

This is something we still haven’t made technical discovery on since we’re focusing in other initiatives.

Also happy to hear feedback from you around any particular use case you may have! :)

@hhugo with H1 coming to a close soon, is this still on track for a beta soon? Would love to try it out and see how it impacts traffic to our space!

@kristineo we received some important last minute requests around other features we had to work on in the meantime so this got a bit delayed and might be pushed to H2, instead.

Our H1 goes until end of July, so we still have some time to work on this feature, although I don’t want to commit to an end of H1 date anymore and prefer to be a bit more cautious with timelines.

I do apologise as we’re trying our best to bring this to life - on this note, I’d be curious to understand if you thought of any new use cases around categorisation in the Ideation and Product Updates modules that you could share?

Expanded permissions for this (and beyond) are targeted for Q1 2026 currently!
