Hiya!

This Idea has been created based on an existing thread, with consent from those involved. Please see the original thread as well for further details.

RSS (aka Really Simple Syndication) used to be a pretty popular way of getting news feeds in your browser without having to manually keep watch over a bunch of websites or get flooded with emails. It isn’t quite as popular these days, but it does still have uses and is enjoyed by those who do use it. inSided currently has support for generating RSS Feeds from two of the main activity feeds (new topics and new topics/replies).

However, at this time it’s not possible to use any kind of Authenticated RSS Feed to get a feed for any private areas that require the user to be logged in. It would be great if this was made possible, since it would make RSS more useful and allow RSS fans to get more alerts that way rather than via email.

Thanks for raising this idea @Blastoise186! The security implications seem a bit worrying if it’s based on a token in the URL. But maybe there’s another solution that is more secure.

This one got my vote, but I also wanted to chime in with a link to my use case described here:

Mostly I’m wondering just based off an idea: We see good engagement with internal staff by “bringing community posts to them” with a Slack integration. How might we offer something similar to external users who don’t love email subscriptions?

  • Based on the shift towards Slack/Teams etc in work comms and collaboration
  • Knowing that developer personas often prefer to work in Slack

General concept would be:

  • Open Slack or Teams setup
  • Community article that says: Want to stay up-to-date on Community without email? And then provides instructions for how they might setup an RSS feed type integration for their own personal/team use.

Not looking for a particular Insided platform capability, but moreso wondering if there’s a secure solution in that vein that helps bring community into the existing non-email workstreams of the users.

While outdated, maybe there’s something around RSS that could work. Edit: A quick google search found this article as a starting point. I think I can do this via Slack (and find something similar for Teams).

I could run with an RSS based solution, but the unauthenticated nature of the RSS feed presents some challenges.
