Currently the sidebar in Groups is hardly being utilized as a tool to show contextual content. Except from the group description and the group member list there are no additional widgets available.

I propose to have the groups sidebar be customizable like the general sidebar, with the ability to add, move, remove and configure widgets, such as:

  • Events widget
  • HTML widget
  • Announcement card / “featured_side”

With these additions there wouldn’t be a need to build workarounds in order to e.g. promote events, feature content.

Hey @bjoern_schulze, thanks for sharing this! I’m 100% with you on this idea. Having customization helps to provide better contextual information to group members.

Some questions for you:

  1. What kind of information you’d like to show on the group page? e.g. an event, a highlighted topic.
  2. Any specific use case for HTML widget?
  3. Would you use different widgets on different group pages?
  4. Are there any shareable components/content, you’d like to configure once only and display on all group pages?

Hi @xiaoyu-shen,

  1. Private group events, Highlighted topics from the group (but also community wide), Solved topics, HTML block, Leaderboard, Tag cloud, Badges
  2. Provide a direct link to a (external) beta software download page, Custom menu (with relevant links regarding the group project)
  3. Not for the global widgets (like solved topics), but for highlighted topics and HTML block
  4. Yes, some widgets like Solved topics, Leaderboard, Tag cloud, Badges → should have the same configuration community-wide (Homepage, general sidebar, topic sidebar)

Hi all,

Agree with this idea, would love to be able to add a permanent call to action using the HTML widget in a group, like we do in Product Updates. Our use case: we have a specific group for users of a product. We need to create topics now to highlight specific related areas of the community or feature topics at the top. Would be handy to use the side bar, which is largely empty for this purpose.

Any news with this idea?, The current description and list of members seems pretty basic to me for a group. I would love to see more options

Thanks

💯  and all gamification around groups

Hi! To help us better identify areas of improvement for Groups, we’ve created a 7-8 minute survey. It would be awesome if you could take the time to fill this in. At the end of the survey, you’ll have the option to opt-in to any upcoming Groups betas, as well as be invited for interviews and usability tests.
