Search improvements - additional sort and filter options

There are a couple of improvements that our community (and our team) would like to see for the search options:

  1. Sorting results (eg by date, most liked, etc)
  2. Additional filters (eg solved, date range

Sorting results

Being able to sort by different factors would make it a lot easier for members to find posts that are useful for them. For example, date and most likes would be really helpful in allowing folks to hone in relevant topics. Both of those sort options are available for comments, so it would make a lot of sense to add them to the search results too.

Filters

The big one here would be whether a question has been answered. There’s a couple of use cases for this: if you’re a member with a similar question and you only want to see questions with an answer or if you’re a member who wants to help others with questions relating to specific topics (eg if you’re an expert in something/have particular skills and you want to find folks that need help with questions aligned with your knowledge).

Other useful filters would be:

  • Author type (eg Member, moderator, user role/ranks)
  • Within a date range (eg last month)

Those options would allow members to easily find the content that’s relevant to them.

Although the improvements for search are very nice, it's such a shame that basic filtering options like sorting on date are still not here.

We are receiving the same feedback as @Ilona @juliaw and not jut from customers but internal usrs.

Users looking for exact titles of topics are not finding said topics.

I understand that ranking by relevance takes priority over ranking by date, and allowing to sort by date is not always the best way to go. But a date filter and even more of a pipe dream, ability to adjust ranking.

I would want to prioritize Knowledge base content for support use cases.

Prioritize content type by custom role. i.e. out of our 5 products a users in product A should see preferential results based on Product A.

Hello team,
I’m following up on this idea as it has become blocking for day-to-day community usage.

The lack of advanced sorting options (date, relevance, popularity, etc.) and more granular filters makes search difficult to use as soon as content volume grows. The result is lost time, difficulty finding relevant information, and increasing user frustration.

Immediate impact:

  • Inefficient search → lower engagement

  • Moderation and idea management become more difficult (duplicates, history, trends)

  • Reduced ability to extract value from existing content

👉 Without these capabilities, search does not meet the real needs of users and moderators.

This improvement is now urgent and would have an immediate positive impact on the overall community experience.

Thank you for considering this as a priority.

The lack of advanced sorting options (date, relevance, popularity, etc.) and more granular filters makes search difficult to use as soon as content volume grows.

I want to add that, yeah, when there is a lot of content, the current search feature is unusable. I mean when there are lots of topics, and also if those topics have lots of comments.

Imagine a situation where you find 47 matches (topics) from the search results, and most of them have 2–3 digit numbers of replies, or even more...

Hey all,

My name is Graeme the PM for Search and a few other things.

So we are working on improvements here, filters is something we are looking at, we will be starting on the Community side of Search, I am just pointing that out as I saw some mentions of improvements on the Admin side of things and wanted to make sure there is no confusion.

Cheers,

Graeme

Now that you are improving the search engine, I hope that you consider improving the search so that older and closed topics would not appear in the search results (at least not in the top results) :)

This is a feature that our customers in the community are wanting too. Specifically being able to search by date / most recent.

Glad to see this is on the road map. We just migrated to Gainsight and so far, our most requested feature is the ability to filter by author so hopefully that can be included in any updates. Thanks!

+1

Our community needs this as well, as the search filter is heavily used by our super users, especially the filter by Author option.

Very looking forward to the enchancmenets on this!
