Hi there -

I am trying to great a new feature engagement using the V2 editor. How can I use hotspots to guide my users through the engagements? Are buttons my only option?

If I can’t use hotspots in V2, can I switch my editor to V1 and save all the styling work in my draft?

Hi @kaitlyn.burke.pm. In the V2 editor, you should be able to click on “add steps” and select a hotspot step from the default template. You’ll need to format it for colors/size, but it will add the hotspot to your guide. Hope that helps!

Thank you - I am halfway there! I have been able to add a hotspot, but are you able to get this to show along with another slide that has instructions for your user (i.e. Click on the hotspot to proceed)? Or do you need to have nav buttons to click ‘Next’ on a slide and then it shows a hotspot?

I don’t believe it will show at the same time as another step; it is a step on it’s own. So on the step prior to the hotspot, you could tell them to look for the hotspot.

However, if you guide point to the next thing you want them to do, I don’t know if the hotspot would be necessary. You might have user drop off the guide at that point if they don’t see the hotspot to click.

We have used hotspots (as the  first step of the guide) to call attention to a feature we think the user should be accessing. Then if the user sees the hotspot and clicks it, they’ll get the content. I personally haven’t built a guide that has a hotspot as a step in the middle of the guide.

Badge

Is the hotspot what is otherwise called a badge?

Why would you  have a hotspot in the middle of a guide? Wouldn’t you use a tooltip that points to the UI element?

Hi @mmarques. No, a hotspot is a dot with an emanating circle around it. You can configure the size and color of the dot and speed of the repeating circle that grows around it. You can anchor it just like a badge, but it’s part of an engagement, so it only appears at your scheduled frequency.

As I mentioned, we use it to try to call attention to a feature that users should be using, or to a new feature, but I haven’t found a use case to have a hotspot as a step in the middle of a guide.

Badge

@JayS - Interesting, although seems like an ugly UI. I’d rather have an automatic badge. Or start with a tooltip, so that I can attach some wording to it.

It’s less intrusive than a tooltip. So if the user sees it, they may click on it, but it doesn’t interrupt their workflow like a popup tooltip.
