Need option to Subscribe to Events calendar

I really would like to see the ability for a member to subscribe to our events calendar/page on community. Subscribed users would receive an email notification if a new event was posted, so we could get the word out more broadly.

Right now a member has to be on the home page and happen to see the event widget in order to find out about upcoming events.

We don’t have that many events happening that I’m worried about spamming people, but it would also allow us to stop duplicating efforts. Right now, we have teammates posting to a community category about their upcoming office hours (“Events & Office Hours”), plus I’m creating events for the same.

I’d say this is fundamental for the events section to have certain following.

Currently our customers have to subscribe to a more general blog feed to hear about upcoming events. Several users have expressed interest in being able to subscribe to an events feed instead. We would definitely implement this.

@daniel.boon Is there any movement on this product feature?

There’s currently no movement on this idea  @benjamin-michael. However, we do envision inSided as the best place to centralise event promotion, so this is something I am keeping on my radar. I’m afraid I don’t have any concrete timelines to give you.

@daniel.boon have you seen any teams with workarounds through the API?

Good question → I haven’t seen any examples of this myself → if needed, we could look at exposing some webhook events in our API (e.g. ‘event created’) which could then be used to trigger emails. But you’d still need some way of storing the preferences of users who wanted to be notified.

I love this idea and hope it continues to pick-up votes. Sharing a few related ideas from our team that I think are smaller pieces of this big picture vision. Consider voting for:

I imagine that would be a starting point for building some subscription functionality.

This one I believe is critical to enabling subscriptions for events: we need a draft mode to create and polish the event before publishing and triggering a system email notification for the subscriptions.

Had a request for this feature today - automatically receive a calendar invite to all new events posted in the events section!

Wanted to add from @Sebastian ‘s suggestion what I would like to see in the email at a minimum

I would want the email to include event details such as:

  • Event Image
  • Event Title
  • Date/time/timezone
  • Location
  • Description
  • RSVP button which leads to the event page

I know we would definitely use this feature if it became available. We frequently have community members asking about how to be automatically updated on events.

A community member requested this today, and I was surprised this functionality doesn’t already exist! It seems like the best option right now is to create both an event and a topic about the event in a category where users can describe, which feels like duplicative work that will quickly clutter the home page.

@megan I’d avoid creating an event and a topic. If you’re just trying to drive visibility then within the community home page you can feature events as topics (which we do in our community) or display using the event calendar widget.

Any chance there’s an update on this?

We do have some upcoming improvements planned to the Events module over the next few months. Whilst I cannot confirm this particular feature 100%, we plan to include this in the improvements.

I don’t want to make any promises I cannot keep so allow me to manage some expectations. The caveat being that our engineering team has to limit the scope of the Event improvements so that they can also begin work on another anticipated feature, the Notification Centre. So there’s a possibility that the functionality described in this idea could be postponed if time runs out.

Once I know more concrete details here, I will update this thread.

Adding to this thread that subscribing to Events would add a lot of value to our Community as a “one stop shop”. Hopefully this will be part of the updates coming out to the Events page.

Hi @mdellarocco and @lewysgammondphi 👋,

The ability to subscribe to the Events module is still in scope for the upcoming Events module improvements. I don’t have a specific ETA I can give but the feature is still on our near-term roadmap so you can expect to make use of it very soon.

We really appreciate your patience for this one and can’t wait to implement this functionality!

Hi @olimarrio

What's the latest update on event subscriptions? Can you give some hints on the timeline? Our community is looking very forward to this feature 🙂 Thanks!

I can see that this has been released, however we have a lot of different event types and feel that if a user could subscribe to a specific event type it would reduce the spamming of non-relevant events, missing the actual event we want them to know about.

@alan.edwards nailed it!

Users expect to be able to subscribe to the content types and topics they care about without drinking from the firehose. Anything more is just noise.
